October Book Club Pick What Happened to Ruthy Ramirez

A raw, funny and deeply powerful debut novel about a Nuyorican family that discovers their long-missing sister is potentially alive and cast on a reality TV show, and sets out to bring her home. Great pick for readers of Black Cake, Dominicana, and Of Women and Salt. We loved this book for its captivating use of voice and meaningful details through mundane, realistic interactions. It does not shy away from difficult topics, and the characters soldier through their questions and imperfections.

About the author

Claire Jiménez is a Puerto Rican writer who grew up in Brooklyn & Staten Island. She is the author of the well-acclaimed short story collection Staten Island Stories. She co-founded the Puerto Rican Literature Project, a digital archive. Her fiction, essays & reviews have appeared in Remezcla, among other publications. Currently she is an Assistant Professor of English & African American Studies at the University of South Carolina.
