Conscious Beauty with Jessica Alba

For people & the planet

I grew up in a family where we recycled and reused everything, so conscious living has always been important to me. Because of that, Honest is always working to innovate the most resourceful and respectful solutions so that you don’t have to choose between what’s good for you and the planet. I’m beyond excited to share our new packaging that takes the fuss out of reducing, reusing and recycling, along with some tips to help you take steps toward sustainability that can add up to make a big difference.
It starts in the lab It’s not enough to ask you to practice sustainability without doing so ourselves first, so our sustainability mission begins with the practices that we implement within our own lab and in our formulas. We strive to create formulas with responsibly sourced ingredients, meaning that they don’t strain our natural resources. Why is that? Because when you overuse one ingredient, you are taking it away from an ecosystem that relies on it. When the chemists at Honest HQ are creating these formulas, they engage in sustainable practices—instead of disposing of sample jars and tubes, our chemists clean them out with washable cloths, sanitize them, and then reuse them again and again.
Living consciously with Honest Beauty To make it super easy for you to live consciously, we’re creating packaging made of mono-materials like our Magic Beauty Balm. "Mono-material" means it’s a product that consists of one single material so that you don’t have to remove or de-assemble anything once you’re done. Just throw it in your recycling bin—it’s that simple.
Tin and aluminum are also materials that you’ll see our products in. They’re some of the easiest materials to recycle and they can be recycled infinitely without breaking down over time. Check out our 3-in-1 Detox Mud Mask and Creme Cheek + Lip Color. And if you’re like me and can’t live without a mirror in your compact, don’t worry: we’ve created a mirror out of polished metal so that it doesn’t impact the recyclability.
In instances where we can’t avoid using plastic, we’ve opted for post-consumer recycled plastic which is a more sustainable alternative to creating virgin (aka new) plastic. You may notice that these bottles have a grayish hue to them, like our Calm & Go Mist’s bottle which is made from 100% PCR plastic. This is a sign that your bottle, which was once virgin plastic, has been recycled and given a new life. It can be recycled once you’re done, or you could clean it out and use it to mist your plants.
Lastly, I’m so happy to share that all of our Honest Beauty products are transitioning to tree-free secondary packaging, made from sugarcane byproduct that would have otherwise been discarded. Once you’ve unboxed your faves, these cartons can go back to the earth as they’re 100% compostable and biodegradable. For complete instructions on how to recycle your Honest Beauty products, go to honest.com/cleanout P.S. Remember to always check your local recycling center’s guidelines.
Even more ways to go green We all love a good sheet mask but have you ever stopped to think about how much waste they’re creating? That’s why I wanted to make the reusable Honest Beauty Silicone Face Mask. I just rinse it out and let it dry after every use, and it works like magic every time. To save water (which is a limited resource) I created our new Skin Sweep Exfoliating Powder Cleanser which can save up to 2,800 gallons of water per year and is amazing for traveling—so long checked bags! If you’re not ready to take that plunge, try rinsing off one of our traditional cleansers like the Gentle Gel Cleanser with our konjac sponge to save water and get added exfoliation.
