Beneath the Bending Skies by Jane Kirkpatrick is the interesting tale of Mollie in her growing up years into her marriage years. Mollie has lost her mother at a young age. The bond between her and her father is strong. However her father suddenly remarries. Mollie is thrown into a whirlwind of emotions. Mollie also finds the love of her life who happens to be a friend of her father. Her protective father forbids her to marry him. Will this ever resolve? Will she ever be able to be with Peter? Can her father let her go? Beneath the Bending skies is an interesting tale. It is set in the 1860s in the west. There is much written of the Native Americans and the occurrences in this historic time. I did find it interesting that Mollie prays to the rosary which was surprising for Christian fiction. There is some foreshadowing in the story which was rather interesting as well. I did enjoy Beneath the Bending Skies and would recommend it. I was given a copy from the publisher for my honest review.

Emotional Historical Read

Beneath the Bending Skies by Jane Kirkpatrick is an eloquent and unique work of historical fiction. Based on real-life events, this story focuses on Mollie Sheehan Ronan and her experiences growing up and forging her own way in the wilds of the West. This is my second Jane Kirkpatrick book, and I love her writing style. Reading like a memoir, Mollies story is delivered intimately, full of details of her life and the emotions that troubled her for many years. I grew to love Mollie: her passion for life, her quick wit, her love of books, and her desire to please God. I even did a Google search to learn more about her! The author does a fantastic job of building the landscape of the West with her words. I grew fond of the land alongside Mollie and felt her loss as she left the beauty of Montana behind. In every way, I felt fully immersed in Mollie’s story from beginning to end. What I love the most about this kind of story is that it keeps history alive. Mollie’s memory lives on. Her life, though maybe not extraordinary by some standards, was still beautiful, emotional, and inspirational. And now, it’s been given new life through Jane Kirkpatrick’s talented words. Fans of historical fiction will enjoy learning about Mollie and the impact of her life on history. I was given a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions are my own.

This is the second book I have read by this author. One of the reasons I am drawn to her books is because they are based on true stories. Her books also have beautiful covers. I was surprised at the short length of the chapters in this book but also very happy because it made the book feel like it read faster. Even though this book is historical fiction, it reads more like a diary or autobiography. This is definitely a coming of age story. Mollie Sheehan went through a lot over the years but she always seemed to keep her faith. I am amazed at how she pushed through some of the difficult things that happened in her life. I would recommend this novel to those who like historical fiction or novels based on true stories. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher.

TRUE TALE OF TRUE LOVE

“I was still a child who wanted her father’s blessings. And I wanted to never disgrace my mother’s memory by being disobedient,” Mollie tells herself in Jane Kirkpatrick’s novel, Beneath the Bending Skies. ~ What ~ Based on a women’s memoir and written in first person, this three-hundred-and-fifty-two-page paperback targets those interested in romantic historical fiction about living in Montana in the 1860s. With no profanity, topics of mistreatment, mental abuse, war, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. The beginning includes reviews, a list of the author’s written books, and a cast of characters while the ending has the author’s notes, acknowledgments, thirteen discussion questions, part of another novel by the writer, a biography, and advertisements. In this true story set in Montana during the mid-1800s, sixteen-year-old Mollie Sheehan feels she is never enough as she strives to honor and obey her father’s every command, especially after her mother has passed away and he has remarried. When she falls in love with an older man, not only does her controlling and demanding Irish father forbid the courtship, but also he moves his family out to California. Over time and with God’s providence, the young woman learns what is important in life and how to obtain the desire of one’s heart. ~ Why ~ This is a tender, redeemable tale of an agile young woman who feels she consistently fails her controlling father, yet over time, she experiences the meaning of true love. I appreciate the persistence Mollie showed in obeying her father, even when he was often wrong in his decisions. From living among gold miners to adjusting to the San Diego culture to accepting the ways of working for a government agency on a remote Montana Indian frontier, she comes to grips with being true to God and herself. The author’s notes clearly explain what facts are gleaned from Mary Ronan’s memoir and what is fictitious in the novel. ~ Why Not ~ Those who do not like rewritten true stories may want to pass on this one, but its detail told with emotion and frustration is well done as one reads about tillers, land rights, and Indian superstitions. Some may not care for the Catholic references. ~ Wish ~ Having read several books by the author and finding them wordy at times, this was my favorite read so far, but I wish it spelled out the simple plan of eternal salvation. I also prefer all pronouns of God were capitalized for reverence. ~ Want ~ If you like historical fiction taken from a protagonist’s memoir that focuses on coming of age and growing up despite an overprotective father, this is an exceptional story that promotes feminine individuality and perseverance as one relies on God. Thanks to Revell for furnishing this complimentary book that I am under no obligation to review.

Honor Thy Father

I loved this read, based on real people and real happenings. Be sure to read the author's notes at the end! A story of love, for a parent, and for a spouse, and then your children. A romance between a young girl and a man that is ten years older, and soon forbidden. How does this work out? Well, we are there for the bumpy ride, and the crossing of many states, the hardships and and the trials of life. This is Mollie Sheehan and Peter Ronan's story, their journey to win her father's approval. We are also treated to some US history, and spend time with Indigenous Peoples, and are there with as they try to survive. A read you don't want to miss! I received this book through Net Galley and the Publish
