After reading several conflicting reviews for this mattress pad, I wasnt confident that it would do as advertized. The NASA developed temperature regulating coating, Outlast, seemed more hype thatn how it really functions. In doing search, most reviews are for the Sumber Cloud Essential and Core mattress pads, not for the Peformance line. They differ by type of fabric the mattress pad itself is made of. The Essential pad is made from 100% thermoplastic based polyester (PES), while Core line is made from 40% Viscose and 60% cotton. Clearly, the Core material is more desireable for hot sleepers, than Essential fabric, regardless of the Outlast coating. The only reason I took a chance on, rather pricey mattress pad was because its 100% Tencel/Lyocell fabric and I knew it would breath. I can honestly say that it works and able to sleep throughout the night without getting overheated. My old mattress pad was 70% polyester-30% lyocell waterproof cooling pad. It was not cooling and the waterproofing barrier prevented the pad from breathing at all. Since we dont need a waterproof pad, there was no concern that the new pad was not waterproof (we never eat or drink in bed, and we dont have accidents). Unlike many "cooling" mattress pads, where its very cool to touch initially, then quickly warms up and retain warm temperature, Slumber Cloud Performance Mattress Pad reaches equilibrium body temperature like your clothing while wearing. The Outlast coated surface is room temperature to touch, initially, it gradually warms up to the body temperature and stays there, It does not trap heat. I'm sure that the fabric itself being lyocell helps breath and help keep it cooler too. Some may feel its not working because it lacks cool surface to touch, but the proof is how it performs while you're sleeping. The mattress pad loft (about 1/4" so its there but very low) adds nice softness to our Sleep Number matress without interferring smart bed functions. We live in a coastal community and we have not had any summer heat wave or super humid days so will have to experience those nights in the future. That said, I do expect this mattress pad to out perform other mattress pads in the similar condition; albeit it too will be hot then - just not as much.
