Brother MZ53 53-Stitch Mechanical Sewing Machine

Great product just wish there was a little more information on the different stitch settings and how to use them.

I love this sewing machine. I was used to the older ones like 30 yrs old but after being on a waiting list for a whole year to buy a used one of that age. I finally got a new one . It's more computerized I thought I wouldn't like it but it's been great! Thanks for opening my eyes.

Still trying to figure out how to access all the second round of stitches on the dial. I’m trying to figure it out in between crochet projects. Does anyone know how? Thanks

I LOVE Brother sewing machines, but have one major issue with this one. I need, and want to use, the AUTO-THREADER but have been unable to use it because I can't figure out HOW it works. I've been threading the needle manually. The tiny illustration provided in the instructions is not helpful at all. I would greatly appreciate it if you could send me clearer instructions so that I can use the auto-threader. Thank You.

This is a dandy little machine! I picked it up at a thrift store as an easy-peasy portable mechanical (I sew primary on vintage machines which are very heavy) and I find myself selecting this one to sew with over and over! I’ve made clothes, pieced quilts, mended clothing. It’s just very easy. It’s surprisingly powerful, although I wouldn’t recommend it for lots of bag- or wallet-making, and the harp space is smaller, so I wouldn’t attempt to FMQ a quilt (although I plan to try it for “quilt as you go” squares!) Another reviewer remarked that you have to hold the threads when you start, and snip threads when you end. I hadn’t even noticed; as a vintage machine user that’s standard “muscle memory”. The amount of thread you might lose from those steps is inconsequential. I own several of the most sought-after vintage Singers and Kenmores, yet I reach for the MZ53 all the time.That said, I don’t anticipate handing this machine down as an heirloom; the gears won’t last as long as those of an all-metal machine. Also, it is a little annoying that I can’t open up the entire machine easily to fully clean and maintain (I’m 100% DIY on that). But for the time being, very well done, Brother!

At 70 years old and with zero experience in sewing I purchased this machine and watched a few videos on line. I then successfully made a dozen different curtains and storage bags for an RV conversion I was building. All came out fine, though details did improve over the project after the first two or three attempts. I've since used it for clothing repair and a few other projects. The machine was easy to use and accessories were readily available. I have no way to compare this to other options but as a total novice I've been delighted with the purchase and the ease of set up and use.

I sew every day and sometimes I'm in Florida which is not my home. I wanted to buy a good used machine but all that I found on line had to be shipped. I didn't want to wait for one to come and I didn't want to pay for the shipping so I decided to go buy a small inexpensive one (bad choice). This little machine sews we'll. Learning to thread it wasn't fun, it has the strangest tension I've ever seen. Once you get past that all is well. That's until you begin to see. When you raise the needle be prepared to hold the upper thread because it will pull out of the needle (that's every time). The thread has to be really long to keep from pulling out. Then when you finish sewing the seam you have this long thread that needs to be cut off and thrown away. That ends up being a lot of thread going into the trash. Thread, by the way is pretty expensive these days and ends up being a Hugh waist! It is so frustrating trying to keep the thread from pulling out of the needle that I'm afraid it will stop a new sewer from going any farther and just plain thinking that sewing is not for them. If not for the thread situation it would be an okay beginner machine but I don't recommend anyone buying this particular model. I think I'm taking mine back to the store for a different model.

I found the directions to be easy to read and very helpful. I put thread through needle and again used the directions for reference. I practiced on a few pieces of fabric and I was good to go! This would make a great machine for a beginner!

It's great for those of us who are only just beginning and learning to sew as well as those who are more experienced. I found the machine to be user friendly with easy to read instructions. It comes with a finger gaurd for safety and two floral decorative faceplates. A wonderful choice for every day sewing or mending. Comes in handy for my patchwork and quilting!

She doesn't have a lot of experience using sewing machines but this was easy to use and had no issues. My son always needs his baseball pants cut shorted and my wife used to do it by hand. She was able to sew my sons pants with this machine so easily that she ended up doing a few others that she hadn't done. The printed pattern on the machine makes it easy to select the right stitch patter. The included accessories will come in handy when she fixes other clothes that she would normally take to my mom to fix. She feels she can do it herself with this machine. She is still playing around with it and thinks she can personalize my sons baseball gear with his initials. She still needs to read the instructions on this but feels very confident because the machine is very comfortable and easy to use. My wife is very exited and eagered to learn to do more with this sewing machine.

You can do all kinds of different stitches, use this for buttons and zippers. It's easy to learn, so can be for beginner to expert. A great value for you buck. It is easy to pick up as it is lite weight and that is something I look for. That is a 5 Star rating for me! Well worth the money. Brother Brand is the way to go!!

I am very new to sewing, so I’m still learning how to do everything, so I can’t fully explain everything, but what I can say is that so far I have found that this sewing machine is very easy to use. The machine comes with a fair amount of accessories such as needles, an instructional dvd, cover for the machine, and so much more. The machine has 53 built-in stitches; I have not used each stitch type, just the basic ones to practice sewing before I take on projects. I do appreciate the finger guard to keep me from hurting myself as I am getting use to the machine. I think this is a pretty good machine to get, so far it has worked out very well for me.

Brother has always been a good brand that I’ve had luck with, and I was thrilled when I heard about this machine. It has so many fun stitches to play around with. I found it to be very user friendly. It’s easy to thread and easy to flip between stitches. I wish it were more heavy duty, but it’s great for creating designs and borders on lighter fabrics. It won’t replace my main sewing machine, but it’s great as a spare or for special projects. I really like it.
