every duvet cover needs a small ribbon inside of each corner to tie the duvet on, it's like an anchor. if there are no ties the duvet gets bunched up inside of the cover and will not lay flat throughout the night and when you're trying to make your bed. it also makes it vehemently annoying to try to put the duvet inside without something to anchor it into a certain spot. it's USELESS without these ties. it was very rough textured until after I washed it, and even then it's not super soft like regular cotton. I'm assuming this is just how Egyptian cotton is - though I was under the impression that Egyptian is softer.
