Description

Book Synopsis

The author of the phenomenal bestselling 100 Days of Real Food series addresses the most common concern of her readers--how to cut out processed food on a tight budget--in this full-color cookbook with shopping lists and prices for each recipe.

Millions of American families are discovering the dangers of eating processed food. But wholesome, fresh ingredients can seem more expensive--from buying organic grains, dairy, and produce to the issue of food waste as people learn to plan and cook in new ways.

With her hugely popular 100 Days of Real Food blog and her two bestselling books, Lisa Leake has been a leader in helping everyday families move away from processed foods. She also understands the concerns of her followers who want to eat better without breaking the bank! In 100 Days of Real Food: On a Budget she shows readers how to make a variety of unprocessed dishes for $15 or less a recipe.

Unlike other budget cookbooks that only calculate the cost per serving (have you ever tried to buy just 1/4 cup of sour cream?), this incredibly practical book gives you the exact total cost for all the necessary ingredients for each dish, helping busy families even on the tightest budget plan the meals that will work for them. Lisa provides delicious recipes for breakfast, packed lunch, and dinner, as well as snacks and desserts, including:

  • Cinnamon Roll Pancakes
  • Quiche with an Easy Whole-Wheat Crust
  • Sweet Potato and Black Bean Cakes
  • Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins with Toasted Coconut
  • Green Apple Slaw
  • Chicken Burrito Bowls
  • Cheesy Pasta and Cauliflower Bake
  • Apple Glazed Pork Chops
  • Sausage and Pepper Tacos
  • Asian Chicken Lettuce Cups
  • Oatmeal Cookie Energy Bites
  • Pina Colada Frozen Yogurt Pops

In addition to the wallet-friendly recipes, Lisa shares practical secrets for saving money in the kitchen: learning to plan ahead, getting the best deals on staple items, knowing what to make versus what to buy, growing your own herbs, and even reducing waste--which is currently twenty percent of all food purchased!

We have recently (over the past 6 months) started trying to eat primarily real, healthy food, and thus needed a few more recipe ideas. Lisa's recipes are very good, easy to prepare, and economical. We love this one so much that we sent one to each of our kids for Christmas this year, and they love them too! Our favorite so far is the zucchini recipe, on page 90. We tasted the zucchini base, before making it into soup and liked it so much we fixed baked zucchini for 2 different family get- togethers over the holidays. Everyone loved it, even our 10-year-old niece, who doesn't like zucchini!

I love this book! Sometimes it is overwhelming to make healthy changes but this is a great place to start. Easy, yummy recipes and the best part is how this teaches you to do it on a budget! Cutting out processed foods does not have to be hard or expensive.

I just received my copy of Lisa's newest cookbook and it's another great one to add to your shelf. One of the cool things about this cookbook is that there are a lot of ideas on how to eat ‘real food’ on a budget. It’s all about the choices you make and utilizing the food you do buy. There are a lot of great tips for how to set your food budget, lowering your grocery bill, minimizing waste (so key!), growing and preserving foods, and a reminder to ‘always have a plan.’ One thing I’ve always appreciated and enjoyed about Lisa’s books is that they rarely call for ‘one time use’ ingredients. You know, the $7 jar of such-and-such that you only end up using one time…and then end up throwing out after a year… Thankfully, Lisa’s cookbooks use everyday, simple ingredients!! Some of the recipes I'm looking forward to trying first: smoked salmon cakes (with a fried egg on top!), a summer salad (with diced peaches and fresh mozzarella…yum), easy pickle dip, baked shells with ricotta & marinara, fast food chicken nuggets, baked bean stuffed potatoes, cinnamon roll pancakes, zucchini & feta fritters, oatmeal cookie energy bites, and more!
