Although faint, you will hear a very slight tick of this clock if you were to be directly in front of it or if the environment was completely silent. Otherwise, you would hardly even notice the ticking sound at all. Since this clock is weather resistant you will not have to worry at all about the climate as this is an all year round clock. In response to to your question, I would advise that you return the clock back to the original place of purchase and ask for an exchange. All of our Westclox clocks are under a One-Year Limited Warranty. Therefore, you are entitled to a replacement or a different clock if you prefer. However, if you were to try to fix this on your own then the warranty would no longer be in effect and I would not want that to be the case for you. brnh, thank you so much for your question and best regards!
