The Shrimp Flavor is because of Iodine

Sandeejo - 13 days ago, Verified purchaser
The taste people are complaining about is the iodine in the gulf shrimp, some people like that taste and others don’t, my husband raised at the southern gulf coast said these did not taste like the white shrimp, as stated but in fact he thinks they are the brown gulf shrimp which have the stronger iodine flavor. After moving from the coast and eating targets other shrimp for years here in Minnesota and then cooking these gulf ones today I instantly can remember the shrimp we had in Texas, tasted just like this is a lot of places we ate them at…so I kind of like the familiar taste of home. But it is different of course and my husband now said he wouldn’t feed them to the animals…funny, guess we will for obvious reasons stick to Targets other shrimp we both love.

Like others have said this has an extremely fishy taste and doesn’t cook well. Worst frozen shrimp I’ve ever purchased and certainly the first I’ve ever reviewed.

I usually love shrimp and I tried this bag for the first time the other day and it literally made me sick after two bites. It’s a great price but tastes disgusting, fishy and like chemicals.

I suddenly have a cyst the size of an apple on my leg, which is a reaction I have to phosphates. Realized this product has sodium phosphate added to it. I’ve never seen that in shrimp before and didn’t think I had to check the labels every single every single time I buy it. Thanks for the severe pain.

I followed my normal shrimp Alfredo routine by peeling, deveining and soaking the shrimp. I noticed the shrimp didn’t appear to look like normal shrimp, but continued anyway. The moment I put the shrimp in the pain to cook, I smelled rubber. I didn’t think much of it until I had a taster. Tasted like rubber. Absolutely ruined my meal. I will never use cheap target brand shrimp. These should be pulled off the shelf.

I cook with jumbo shrimp several times a week and am EXTREMELY picky about the shrimp product I choose. Some that are shell, tail, and deveined are actually unsuitable for many dishes as the manufacturing process tends to damage the shrimps. These ones, I purchased two bags, are OUTSTANDING! No broken or unpresentable shrimps at all. They are all perfect, free of odor, and do exceedingly well in my recipes. Here's a quick tip for fast basic preparation: 1) bring pot of water (preferably filtered water) to boil; 2) "salt like the sea" the water; 3) put the FROZEN shrimp in; 4) Leave boiling for about 4 minutes or until shrimps are opaque; 5) reach in with spider to remove or pour through spider to drain. It's that simple. Do not wait until the shrimp get overly curled. They don't need to have to be cooked for very long at all or they'll become tough. Make a lemon butter dipping sauce out of ghee and lemon and serve them warm OR shock them with ice and make a shrimp cocktail. To make shrimp sauce, simply combine ketchup, horseradish, and a little squeeze of lime juice and some salt to taste and you're good to go.

If I could give it zero stars I would. The shrimp has a grainy texture. The taste is off. The minute I opened the bag I should have just dumped it as the smell was off and now I have ruined other ingredients. The smell and taste is to overpowering we cannot eat it. It almost taste chemical like.

I have never wrote a review for a target item but THIS needed to be said. At first, I thought the shrimp tasted a bit funny. The 2nd time I was preparing the shrimp and realized there was some type of YELLOW PUSS that came from its tail area. I really wish I had taken a picture. Seriously stay away from this shrimp!

These were very soft and deteriorating when I thawed them. They smelled super fishy like they were bad and they still had a good amount of the peel and veins despite saying “peeled and deveined.” I discarded the bag and did not eat them. Would give no stars.
