"The deeply spiritual third installment of White's The Codebreakers series features a romance between a Russian cryptographer and an English photographer amid the destruction of WWI. . . . White's smooth flowing narrative and resonant themes of misinformation and social upheaval will draw readers in to this glowing love story."--Publishers Weekly
"The background of WWI intelligence work proved fascinating, and the fully developed characters--both primary and secondary players--engaged my interests and sympathies. White's writing flows, and she tells a fine story. Lily and Zivon's Christian faith sustains them, but the issues they confront are those readers of every religion wrestle with, and will resonate with anyone who has struggled with loss and suffering." --Historical Novels Review

This book was the 2021 Christy Award winner for Historical Romance and it so deserves the accolades. The author masterfully combines espionage of WWI, the revolution in Russia, artistry and beauty of photography, astounding faith, and sweet romance to create one unforgettable novel. I loved learning about British intelligence and how codes and photos were used during the Great War. Zivon was a fantastic hero - so noble and dedicated and intelligent. His journey to forgiveness through grief and anger was heart-breaking but full of truth and encouragement. Lily's compassion and tenderness were the perfect antidote to Zivon's shadowed past. The plot was intricately detailed and there were quite a few gasp-worthy twists. If you enjoy historical romance, this is a must read! I received the book from the publisher via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

I'm a huge fan of Roseanna M. White's writing, and The Codebreakers series just might be my favorite. A Portrait of Loyalty is the final book and was an amazing way to finish the series. I loved the wonderful characters, especially Zivon and his constant unwavering faith. I loved seeing Lilly and Zivon's relationship develop and thrive even through the difficulties they face. A constant with Roseanna's books is the depth of research she puts into them and the wonder descriptions of people and settings that makes the reader feel transported and fully absorbed, and A Portrait of a Lady does not fall short. While reading you truly feel transported and can't help becoming totally immersed in the story filled with adventure, intrigue, tragedy, and romance. All of the books in the series can be read as stand-alone novels, but do yourself a favor and read the entire series! Absolutely excellent! I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions about it are my own.

I completely enjoyed this book. The way that White built the world around these two characters was amazing. Both characters were unusually attuned to the world around them, and I enjoyed every moment I spent looking at everything through their eyes. Zivon is one of the most unique characters I’ve ever read. This story took me on a roller coaster of emotions, and I could not stop reading. I have read the other books in this series, but don’t feel that you have to in order to enjoy this one. That being said, the setting is the same, so you will get to spend time with the previous characters as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Romance. The characters were brought to life in front of my eyes, and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. I received a copy of this book from the publisher and was in no way forced to post a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Great Conclusion Series!

The Codebreakers is an outstanding series and this book is the perfect way to wrap it up! A Portrait of Loyalty has everything that I love in a book: a fictional story based on historical facts, two incredible characters who get their own chance to shine, lots of intrigue and suspense, and an extremely strong faith element. Lily BLackwell is a photographer and Zivon Marin is a cryptographer who begin as friends but working together in the war effort shows them that they share so much more and even when rumors about the Russian Zivon's character run rampant, Lily remains steadfast and faithful. Who wouldn't wish that they could find happiness...together? This story is set in London in 1918, during the time of World War I and the Spanish Flu, and author Roseanna M. White has given me a new appreciation of these historical occurrences. I've gained a whole new knowledge of the spies and the cryptographers who influenced the outcome of World War 1 and I've been reminded just how similar the Spanish Flu and the current Corona Virus pandemic really are! A Portrait of Loyalty is a remarkable story of trust, loyalty, and forgiveness during the worst of times and I recommend it to all who enjoy historical Christian romance. I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. A favorable review was not required and no monetary compensation was given. These are my own thoughts.

As a reader, I desire to learn, to grow, to be challenged, to be comforted, to be entertained, and to be inspired. Portrait of Loyalty is a book that easily fulfills each of those desires leaving me in awe of how much the author, Roseanna M. White is able to accomplish with mere words on paper. Portrait of Loyalty, the final book in The Codebreakers series, is a truly thrilling and utterly enjoyable historical fiction novel. This well-researched story is certainly compelling and exceptionally well-written. Brimming with history, romance, danger, and intrigue, this book is interesting, thoughtful, and genuinely moving. With great skill and remarkable thoughtfulness, Ms. White has written a novel that shines with excellent pacing and captivating details. Offering a fresh perspective and relevance to historical events that happened in England, Europe, and Russia during WWI, this story is rich in characterization and unforgettable plot points. Themes of perseverance, forgiveness, faith, and hope add depth and meaning to a story that is wholly inspiring and emotionally-stirring. Ms. White has undoubtedly secured a place as one of my favorite authors. Her splendid talent for storytelling thrills me again and again. Thought-provoking, encouraging, and memorable, Portrait of Loyalty is a very special novel and a superb conclusion to a stunning series. I eagerly recommend it to all readers. *I was given a copy of this book by the publisher and NetGalley. A review was not required. The review I have written is voluntary and contains opinions that are entirely my own.

A Portrait of Loyalty continues Roseanna M White’s The Codebreakers series. This third installment from the series is probably my favorite of the three. Even though this is part of a series, I think it is safe that it can be read as a stand alone. I loved every single page of this story from start to finish. It has a lot I love reading in a story. Which includes: history, mystery, suspense, adventure, faith and teaching some very important lessons. It was so very good. I am giving The Portrait of Loyalty a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend this one, as well as, the rest of The Codebreakers series, for readers who enjoy a clean and inspirational historical fiction. I received The Portrait of Loyalty from the author, but was not required to write a review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
Secrets, Love & Propaganda!

While WWI raged on, unrest took over in Russia with the removal and execution of the Tsar, along with the Bolsheviks take over. Zivon, an expert cryptographer, highly valued by the Tsar, had spoken out against Lenin, and put himself in peril. He fled for his life to England where British Intelligence put him in a low-level code breaking job, far below the prestigious position he left. Although expert at his job, he was often looked at with apprehension, could he really be trusted? Unknown to Zivon, his brother Evgenie has become a Lenin devotee. He along with comrade, and girlfriend, Nadya, dogmatically push anarchy, or anything else to help the revolution. They will stop at nothing, including putting Zivon’s life in danger. Lily Blackwell secretly uses her expert photography skills for the British Intelligence, but she must sneak around so her mother does not discover it. Lily is fascinated by Zivon, but her father is suspicious of him. Intrigue, espionage, and covert dealings pepper this tale’s pages, and keep you glued to them. At the same time, you will feel the emotions the characters face from the war, their interactions with each other, and, ironically, a flu pandemic. I highly recommend this clean, five-plus star story told from a Christian viewpoint. Bethany House Publishers through NetGalley has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, A Portrait of Loyalty, for the purpose of review.
WW1 Codebreakers

A Portrait of Loyalty by Roseanna M. White is the third book in her Codebreakers series. Lillian Blackwell uses her camera and her knowledge to help the Admiralty during WW1. Zivon Marin, one of Russia’s top cryptographers, flees Russia with information he hopes the British will use to help end the war. Meeting Lily was not part of his plan. When her life and his loyalties are threatened, will they be able to overcome or will they be the next casualties of the war? The suspense was very intense in this book, but the romance helped balance it out very well. I loved Lily’s spirited nature and her willingness to help others. The echo that Zivon kept hearing, “Be Still, and know that I am God,” is something we all should listen to. I think this was a great ending to the series! I received this book from the author for my honest review.
An Outstanding Story!

"Zivon Marin is either the greatest asset or the greatest enemy I've ever encountered. I think he is the first. But I can't dismiss the possibility that he is simply more clever than I." And that was the real question, wasn't it? Who was Zivon Marin? Friend, foe, or merely a man fleeing one terrible side of a war in order to aid the other. The problem was, who was going to believe him in any scenario? Fortunately, after fleeing Russia and making it into England Zivon has been given a second chance, plus an incredible opportunity to use his vast linguistic skills on behalf of British intelligence. Sadly, he was separated from his younger brother in the process, carrying only snippets of his former life, and one very intriguing photograph. Lillian Blackwell meets the enigmatic Russian around her own family table, her father having issued Zivon a dinner invitation as he so often did with young men whom he thought might be suitable social companions for his lovely daughters. As an accomplished photographer, Lily sees a man who is shuttered, only giving away token glimpses of what he might be thinking or feeling; a man of sorrows, who has seen far too much taken away to have anything left to give. Nonetheless, as Lily's sister so cleverly points out, "He intrigues you . . . . I maintain that your heart knows something your mind hasn't caught on to yet." The path that Lily and Zivon travel is not an easy one. Not only is there danger, intrigue, and misunderstanding, but deep seeded guilt and a thirst for revenge vie for attention. Their faith will be tested, their lives rocked by grief and unanswerable questions, but in the end they will state with confidence that "He is God . . .. He has not changed. That the same Lord who loved us when all is well loves us still when all is lost. His promises are as true today as they were yesterday. . . . We must trust that His love is enough to see us through now." What an incredible story, one that readers will savor long after the pages have finished turning. It is Roseanna White at her very best! I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.
wonderful historical romance

Portrait of Loyalty, the third and final book in the Codebreakers series by Roseanna M. White, is a wonderful historical fiction book. Having read several of this author’s books, I was excited to read this one and was not disappointed in the least. It is a beautiful story of love, loss, families, and faith. With an expert pen and graceful characterization, the author ushers readers into London of WWI and the lives of Lily and Zivon. I loved the characters in the book--vibrant, compassionate, able to weather the storms they encountered. Lily, the expert photographer who retouches and recreates photos for British Intelligence. Zivon, a top cryptographer who has left Russia to escape the political upheaval brewing there. Watching their romance begin and deepen during the backdrop of WWI, the Spanish Flu, and the Bolshevik Revolution was captivating. This multifaceted story kept me turning the pages--wondering if Zivon's past was going to ruin his present and his future; wondering if Lily and her mother would find their way back to the friendship they once knew; wondering if Lily and Zivon's romance has any chance at all of surviving the various interruptions and interferences. Being a collector of Matryoshka dolls, I enjoyed the references throughout the book to those enchanting nesting dolls. A Portrait of Loyalty is a book that fans of historical fiction will not want to miss. Some of the characters and circumstances are loosely based on real individuals and situations. There is an Author Note section at the end of the book that speaks to the author's research and her fictionalization of real scenarios and people. I found that to be very interesting. This book is not only a story of family relationships and love in wartime but a story where individuals learn that their faith in God is valid and that He can be trusted--that He wants to be trusted...Be still and know that I am God...to work out circumstances in His time. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
A Book That Exceeds High Expectations!

When I look for a good historical novel to read, I have a lot of expectations in mind: I want a story that makes me feel like I’ve stepped back in time with well-developed, relatable characters; an unpredictable, suspense-filled plot line; lots of historical detail; and ideally, a bit of Christian romance thrown into the mix. A Portrait of Loyalty, the third installment in Roseanna M. White’s “Codebreakers” series, has all those elements and more! This beautifully written story took me back to London in 1918, when World War I was nearing its end, the Spanish flu pandemic was raging, and a civil war was beginning in Russia between the Whites and the Reds. The heroine, Lily Blackwell, uses her photography and retouching talents in her service with British Intelligence. It is through this work that she meets Zivon Marin, a linguist and cryptographer who was forced to flee Russia after speaking out against Lenin and now uses his skills to serve his new country, England. I don’t want to give away too much, but this book is a rollercoaster of emotions that kept me glued to its pages from cover to cover. I fell in love with its dynamic characters and was pleased to be reunited with a few friends from the first two books of the author’s “Codebreakers” series, as well. The depth of historical research that went into writing this novel is readily evident. The story is perfectly paced and abundantly colored with detail, yet not so much as to make it boring in the least. I received a complimentary copy of A Portrait of Loyalty from the publishers. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone. Although it is part of a series, this book could easily stand alone. Even so, if you plan to read all three, I recommend doing so in order as they progress along with World War I.
A Book to Savor

Third in the Codebreakers series, A Portrait of Loyalty is a book to savor. I didn't want the book to end, and I didn't want the series to end, either. I truly enjoyed immersing myself in this book. New characters were introduced, and the focus of this book was quite different from the previous ones. That's what's great about historical fiction by White-there is always something new to learn. It was also comforting to see a character from a previous book-knowing that person is competent and trustworthy and can handle the situation. As one can imagine, new love in the midst of the Great War brings with it wonderful highs, and despondent lows. Saying that I felt the emotions along with the characters is an understatement. The danger is real, and the romance is sweet. I highly recommend this book to readers of historical romance. Students of World War I will enjoy this novel as well. I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Bethany House, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
