Book Synopsis
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Jake Brigance is back! The hero of A Time to Kill, one of the most popular novels of our time, returns in a "riveting" (The New York Times) courtroom drama from "the best thriller writer alive" (Ken Follett). There is a time to kill and a time for justice. Now comes A Time for Mercy. Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake's fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line. Bursting with all the courthouse scheming, small-town intrigue, and stunning plot twists that have become the hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy is a richly rewarding novel that is both timely and timeless, full of wit, drama, and--most of all--heart. The Ending left some questions

***SPOILER ALERT*** I had high hopes for this book and I do like and own most books written by Mr. Grisham. This one started out good and was immediately interesting and had funny parts throughout this overall tragic story which is typical of Mr. Grisham’s writing. Unfortunately, the ending felt very rushed and left too many loose ends: 1) Did Kiera’s baby get DNA tested to prove the late Stuart Kofer was, in fact, the father? I would assume this happened in order for Jake and his family to adopt the baby, but the book didn’t say so specifically. I would think it could be a legal nightmare if it’s discovered later that a different guy was the father and therefore entitled to custody of the child. I guess we’ll never know. 2) The Smallwood case. This was mentioned throughout the entire book and was to be Jake’s big windfall. Would his new legal strategy work to recover chances at a conviction. I really want to know the outcome of that case. 3) what of all the lawsuits? I believe there was a lawsuit against the estate of the late Stuart Kofer and even one against Sheriff Ozzie Walls. I would love to see how those played out 4) Would there be some kind of conflict of interest now that Jake has adopted the biological nephew of his client? I could see that being a potential complication for future trials but at the same time wouldn’t Carla and Jake have considered that themselves? And 5) Will the prosecution go after Drew again or will they come to a realization that a conviction is not likely and let it go? What consequences would that have on the town of Clanton, the safety of Jake’s family, and Judge Noose and Prosecutor Dyer’s election bids??? So many questions and the ending left us hanging. For that reason I knocked off a couple of stars. I can only hope one day Mr. Grisham writes another book picking up where this left off.
