Book Synopsis

A New York Times bestseller! "Don't miss this dazzling tour de force."--Katherine Applegate, Newbery Medal winning author of The One and Only Ivan

This gripping novel about survival and family is based on the real story of one wolf's incredible journey to find a safe place to call home. Illustrated throughout, this irresistible tale by award-winning author Rosanne Parry is for fans of Sara Pennypacker's Pax and Katherine Applegate's The One and Only Ivan.

Swift, a young wolf cub, lives with his pack in the mountains learning to hunt, competing with his brothers and sisters for hierarchy, and watching over a new litter of cubs. Then a rival pack attacks, and Swift and his family scatter.

Alone and scared, Swift must flee and find a new home. His journey takes him a remarkable one thousand miles across the Pacific Northwest. The trip is full of peril, and Swift encounters forest fires, hunters, highways, and hunger before he finds his new home.

Inspired by the extraordinary true story of a wolf named OR-7 (or Journey), this irresistible tale of survival invites readers to experience and imagine what it would be like to be one of the most misunderstood animals on earth. This gripping and appealing novel about family, courage, loyalty, and the natural world is for fans of Fred Gipson's Old Yeller and Katherine Applegate's Endling.

Includes black-and-white illustrations throughout and a map as well as information about the real wolf who inspired the novel.

Plus don't miss Rosanne Parry's stand-alone companion novel, A Whale of the Wild.

From the Back Cover

I have a brother. Sharp. Bigger than me, and all growl. I have sisters. Pounce, who loves to wrestle, and Wag, who talks with her tail. And best of all, my brother Warm, who likes to curl up under my chin, the only pup smaller than me.

Swift, a wild wolf cub, lives with his pack in the mountains. When a rival pack attacks, Swift and his family scatter, and Swift sets out on an incredible journey through dense forests, into barren wilderness, and across flowing water. The trip is dangerous and full of peril, and Swift encounters fire, hunger, hunters, and highways as he wanders. Will Swift find the courage to survive? Will he ever find a place to call home?

A Wolf Called Wander is based on the extraordinary true story of a wolf named OR-7 (and often called Journey)--a wild wolf who traveled a remarkable 1,000 miles across the Pacific Northwest.

My 7 year old daughter loves to read and be read too. She has quite the collection of books and reads at a higher grade level than she’s in. We are almost done with this book. I say” We” because it’s one that she chose for me to read to her before bedtime . I didn’t know how much she’d understand as it’s almost poetic and very descriptive when reading . But when I ask her questions .. she knows more about what the story is describing than I do! It is about reality for wolves and how they live .. this one of course about a special one. If your child doesn’t like or isn’t ready for descriptive stories that involve blood, how an animal eats it’s prey , etc. than you might want to skip this one. But if you can get past what is real for how wild animals live and the food chain.. the story is pleasant and interesting. Tells Of what one wolf goes through to survive and exist.

Originally bought so I could read to the kids, but ended up reading it all in one sitting. The book begins with Swift as a pup, learning the rules of a wolf pack, admiring his father, mother, kin, and generally being happy in the mountains he was born on. One spring, an enemy pack attacks, and Swift is separated from his family. The tale that follows is one of adventure, sorrow, loss, and hope. Despite the simple sentences, good enough for a child advancing their reading level, the language is rich and vivid, providing a wondrous world for readers of any age to get lost in. My experience with the book was pleasing overall. There are many places Swift explores that teach the reader about nature, the animals, and hierarchy in nature. But this isn't just a book that lays out the world like an encyclopedia would. There are bonds throughout the book that Swift makes with wolves and other animals that as well makes the reader feels as though he is right there taking the journey with him, and experiencing the range of emotions he undergoes. You will grow attached to the characters and undergo the same sorrow, disappointment, and bittersweet happiness that Swift does. As the title of the review suggests, I absolutely loved this book and hope for others to read it and take the same journey I took with Swift. There is a section of the book at the end, too, where the author provides pictures of the real-life wolf Swift was modeled after: OR-7, and a simple glossary for terms and the areas where Swift made his journey. This provides a great help to understanding the big setting the author uses in their work.
