This work focuses on recent advancements of composite materials in a broad range of biomedical engineering applications. After discussing hydrogels and metal, ceramic, polymeric composites it presents the fundamentals of computational modelling of bones, muscles and ligaments. In the last part it covers various additive manufacturing techniques e.g. for implants and prosthetic limbs.
About the Author
__Dr. Sumit Pramanik is currently working as a Research Associate Professor at Department of Mechanical Engineering in SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur, India since 2017. Dr. Pramanik is also appointed as Visiting Associate Professor in Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Malaya, Malaysia in 2022. Prior to join in SRMIST, he worked in Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Malaya as Senior Researcher, Part-time Lecturer, Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDRF), and in a R&D of Composite Industry. He obtained his Ph.D degree in 2011 from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, India. He was awarded several prestigious awards, including "Best Researcher Award in the International Scientist Awards on Engineering, Science and Medicine 2022", "Young Achiever Award 2019, InSc", several Best Paper Awards in various International Conferences, etc. He published many scientific articles on Materials, Manufacturing and Biomedical engineering in several reputed journals and edited books from various esteemed publications, especially, review articles in high impact journals like Carbohydrate Polymer, Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (STAM) and original articles in Scientific Reports, RSC Advances, Materials, Materials and Manufacturing Processes, STAM, and so on. __Dr. Sandipan Roy received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2017. Currently, he is a Research Assistant Professor Department of Mechanical Engineering in SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST), Kattankulathur, India since 2017. He has more than 5 years of teaching and research experience in design and applied mechanics with special emphasis in biomechanics. He has also interest in management and industrial engineering and higher education for sustainability and engineering education. He published many scientific articles on biomechanics and design of implants in many international reputed journals. _J. Paulo Davim is a Full Professor at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He is also distinguished as honorary professor in several universities/colleges/institutes in China, India and Spain. He received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1997, M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering (materials and manufacturing processes) in 1991, Mechanical Engineering degree (5 years) in 1986, from the University of Porto (FEUP), the Aggregate title (Full Habilitation) from the University of Coimbra in 2005 and the D.Sc. (Higher Doctorate) from London Metropolitan University in 2013. He is Senior Chartered Engineer by the Portuguese Institution of Engineers with an MBA and Specialist titles in Engineering and Industrial Management as well as in Metrology. He is also Eur Ing by FEANI-Brussels and Fellow (FIET) of IET-London. He has more than 35 years of teaching and research experience in Manufacturing, Materials, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, with special emphasis in Machining & Tribology. He has also interest in Management, Engineering Education and Higher Education for Sustainability.
