After reading Dune, this was a refreshing, fast-paced, approachable fantasy. The hints at religion and political tension were just enough to add realism to the world without bogging down the story. How each character told the story (in alternating chapters) from their perspectives, with slightly different dialects was another great world-building detail. As a fan of crime thrillers and mysteries, this has a number of satisfying and unexpected twists to keep you on your toes throughout. It can't go unmentioned that this story is an exceptional example of strong, gritty, female characters that remain flawed and relatable. You can't help rooting for more than one Thief, knowing there's no way for it to turn out as planned for any one of them. Lean into the descriptions as you read to be immersed in the world as Kuhn paints the picture for you, don't forget that the Lottery is a place, and good luck picking just one misfit to root for! M.J. Kuhn has an impressive debut with Among Thieves, and I can't wait to read the next one!

This author did a fantastic job telling the story from multiple perspectives! It was out of my wheelhouse, yet I couldn’t put it down. Excellent read!
