Q: Notice top of desk looks like it has cut lines/grooves in the wood? Can a student use paper and pencil on this desk since it doesn't look like a solid smooth surface? Afraid every time they hit the grove with pen/pencil it'll go right through their paper.

A: Lora, Thank you for your interest in the Austin Desk. There are shallow grooves in the desk top. We have never received a complaint about someone writing and their pen/pencil going through the paper. Our recommendation would be to use a notebook if this is an issue.

A: The top can hold approximately 100 lbs the shelves can hold about 50 lbs each.

Q: What is the height between shelves. Is there any way to leave out top shelf if I need more height for a laser printer?

A: The weight for the shelves is approximately 30 lbs. The top shelf does not have to be assembled into the piece.

I did a lot of research and even purchased a desk prior to this, from a different retailer, that I returned. This desk appears to be good quality, especially considering the price. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars for "easy of assembly" is becuase both the desktop and the shelves do not come with pre-drilled holes. You must line everything up and make your own holes to insert the screws. Aside from this, the desk looks great in the room and is sturdy and spacious.

Love this desk! Perfect size for me! Assembly of the shelves was very awkward and definitely needs to be a two person job. I also think the wood should also have predrilled holes - you can potentially put it together correctly and screw the top of the desk on crookedly.
