About the Book
"From Emmy-award winning actor, author, comedian, producer, and director Henry Winkler, a deeply thoughtful memoir of the lifelong effects of stardom and the struggle to become whole. Henry Winkler, launched into prominence as "The Fonz" in the beloved Happy Days, has transcended the role that made him who he is. Brilliant, funny, and widely-regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it's simply not the case, he's really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you. Since the glorious era of Happy Days fame, Henry has endeared himself to a new generation with roles in such adored shows as Arrested Development, Parks and Recreation, and Barry, where he's been revealed as an actor with immense depth and pathos, a departure from the period of his life when he was so distinctly typecast as The Fonz, he could hardly find work. Filled with profound heart, charm, and self-deprecating humor, Being Henry is a memoir about so much more than a life in Hollywood and the curse of stardom. It is a meaningful testament to the power of sharing truth and kindness and of finding fulfillment within yourself"--Book Synopsis

Henry Winkler shares his story from childhood through adult stardom in his memoir BEING HENRY: THE FONZ… AND BEYOND. I don't normally jump on reading celebrity memoirs but am glad that I took a chance on this one. Having only seen a few snippets of Happy Days and Henry’s appearance on Parks and Rec, I wouldn’t claim to be a huge fan based off of lack of really following him, not for lack of enjoying the work that I have seen. Even so, I was interested to read this memoir due to Henry’s reputation as “the nicest man in Hollywood.” What a nice read it turned out to be. I enjoyed learning about his childhood and how his career began and progressed over time, developing from acting to directing and producing. He shares his struggles with severe dyslexia and the impact that has had throughout his entire life. I love that he’s written a children’s book series centered on a boy with learning challenges, creating something positive for kids from his own difficult life experiences. BEING HENRY: THE FONZ… AND BEYOND was an enjoyable read that I’d recommend to fans of celebrity memoirs. Thank you to Celadon Books for the gifted ARC.

I haven't watched Happy Days, and I don't read a lot of memoirs. So I'm here to say that this book is still really good even if you don't have a strong pre-existing connection to Henry Winkler. The "behind the scenes" look at what was happening on the set was really interesting from the perspective of what happens behind the scenes of any popular television show, and the challenges of having been typecast as "the Fonz" and then trying to move on with his career was also very interesting because you could see how that would happen even if you yourself do not always get the cultural references. We can all imagine our favorite characters from popular shows and imagine the unfortunate side effect of that success as being "stuck" in that role forever, at least in people's minds. However, by far the most compelling aspect of this memoir was Mr. Winkler's journey through dyslexia. It is almost unimaginable to me to think about not being diagnosed until adulthood, and what that must have been like for him as a child. If for no other reason, people should read this memoir to get a better understanding of how things can be for a child growing up with an undiagnosed learning challenge. Mr. Winkler's success, not just as an actor but in many other areas of life as well, is truly inspirational.
Aay!! An honest, enjoyable memoir

Happy Days was an essential and fun part of my childhood television experience. I remember tuning in after school to The Fonz and the gang. Being Henry by Henry Winkler describes his childhood and early adulthood, his time playing the Fonz and career and life post-Happy Days. Henry Winkler faced several obstacles. His parents were critical and emotionally neglectful; given the circumstances of their escape to the US from pre-war Germany, it's fair to say there was intergenerational trauma, which Henry had to work through in therapy, years later. Henry also has severe dyslexia which was not diagnosed until he in his thirties. School was a struggle for him, as was reading scripts. After launching into the iconic role of The Fonz early in his acting career, Henry was typecast and had trouble getting acting roles. Being Henry is an honest, interesting and unpretentious memoir. The reader has the feeling that they are a friend of Henry's sitting in a cafe with him hearing his story. I enjoyed Henry's insights into Hollywood and family life. Henry seems like a genuinely nice guy and has used his fame to help people, especially children, like creating a series of children's books about a dyslexic kid and raising awareness of dyslexia. Henry's gratitude and appreciation shine through. A lovely addition to his memoir was the perspective of his wife Stacey. I really enjoyed reading this wonderful memoir.

Oh my gosh, I'm not surprised that Henry Winkler reading his autobiography would be amazing, it absolutely is! Being Henry: The Fonz...and Beyond is an utter treat! Literally laugh out loud funny, and endearing, and heartfelt, do yourself a favor and enjoy Being Henry in audio. Mr. Winkler has a marvelous voice, and is quite a talented narrator. (His voice when he's quoting Ron Howard, had me in stitches, he sounds just like him.) I've adored Henry Winkler since I was a teen during the Happy Days show. Then as an adult watching him play Barry Zuckercorn in Arrested Development. Though I have to say, my absolute favorite of his performances is as Adam Sandler's father in Click. (I cry every time I watch it.) A truly stunning autobiography, I can't recommend it enough! Five huge stars to Being Henry: The Fonz...and Beyond.
