About the Book

Reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast, a recluse and a young woman discover that the scars of life are no match against an act of love.

Book Synopsis

Reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast, a recluse and a young woman discover that the scars of life are no match against an act of love.

Iowa, 1903. All of Monticello believes Otis Taylor has been away fostering his musical genius. But the truth is that his father exiled him long ago, rejecting Otis's appearance and the scars that came with it. Now that he is the last living Taylor, Otis has covertly returned to settle his family's affairs and rid himself of his past for good. However, he soon discovers that he may not have been the only abandoned Taylor and begins a tireless search for his missing toddler niece.

At twenty-three years old, Sadie West left her family farm and found employment at the Hoag feather duster factory. It isn't a romantic job, but she's hardly had a glimmer of romance since her beau went off to college, leaving her with no promise of a future together. Desperate to save money and help her family make ends meet, she trespasses and finds shelter in an abandoned building--and is thrown in the path of the town's mysterious bachelor.

Otis's wounds are deep, but as Sadie's friendship with him grows, she begins to fall for the man beneath the mask. Locating his long-lost niece, however, is more difficult than either could have imagined, and Sadie West may be the key to Otis Taylor finally finding his way home.

Every new Rachel Fordham book is my favorite until she writes another. This one is really special. Set in 1903 Iowa, Fordham tells a romantic tale of a lost soul and the ever encouraging young woman who helps him find the courage and grace to hold to a home that didn’t welcome him. One that spun memories of shame and abandonment, transporting him into an upbringing of loneliness. This love story is so beautifully written with banter and bargaining and highs and lows mixed with the tension and emotion that comes with true friendship. I love that Fordham subtlety gives the reader nudges toward the whole story which, for me, makes the book a deeper read. Clues are divulged along the way to fill in the blanks regarding Otis’ past and what had shaped Sarah’s plan for her future…both asking what love really is and what it is not. This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. I received this book from the author/publisher free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review.

There was so much to love about this book! The romance, the hurt and healing, the unique historic focus, the contrasting familial lives, the skating!! Otis and Sadie were each hurt by life in different ways, but, over the course of the story, each learns to cope and finds things to invest time and effort into which really matter and are worth focusing on. I really loved that when they were hurt by one another, the hero and heroine both recognized that the other was only human and that they themselves could be accused of having made equally egregious errors, so forgiveness was always readily forthcoming. It was such a lovely and welcoming series of interactions to bask in, like a cozy hug. Sadie’s relationship with her sisters was AMAZING! They reminded me of my own sisters and I when we’re together, lol! The author was clearly writing from personal experience with the West sisters and I absolutely loved it. Almost makes me wish the author would write a story for each one of them and make this a series! There were several conflicts, sprinkled throughout and happening to various characters, which added plenty of tension and obstacles to focus the story on and keep our fictional friends busy with. The relationship between Otis and Sadie also took a central role, comprising a slow, steady friendship that blossomed beautifully, based on mutual trust and a compulsion for honesty with one another. I just loved everything about this story so much! From a romanticized friendship to a nasty, pushy antagonist to a dramatized, multi-person story-reading to a certain skating rink… (happy sigh) Everything was perfection. And a Beauty and the Beast retelling! Those are some of my absolute favorites! This was my first read by Author Rachel Fordham, but it most certainly will not be my last! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

What a delightful, enchanting tale, with an almost ethereal, magical beauty at times—reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast and the classic, Jane Eyre. I was instantly drawn in with amusement when our lovely heroine, Sadie, who happens to be squatting on grumpy Otis Taylor's land, instantly dubs him Edward Rochester and he in turn nicknames her Jane Squatter. When the wealthy, reclusive, enigmatic man hires Sadie to work in his mansion—a precious, but awkward friendship ensues. Otis isn't your stereotypical storybook hero . . . tall, dark, and handsome. However, Sadie sees past his appearance to his sweet, gentle nature. It's so sad how the world judges the outward appearance of a person, when God looks on the heart. The only thing I truly didn't like was the hero's name, Otis Taylor. All I could think about throughout the entire book was Otis and Andy Taylor on the Andy Griffith show. lol But please don't let that ruin it for you. Beyond Ivy Walls is a heartwarming, well-written novel with a HEA I highly recommend! "I received a complimentary ARC of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a favorable review."
