Q: The label indicates it "must be fully cooked." Is this frozen spinach not safe to consume raw in a smoothie?

submitted by Liz - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi Liz. Thanks for your interest in our Chopped Spinach. This product must be kept frozen (do not thaw) and cooked thoroughly as indicated on the package before consuming. Thanks for checking with us, and have a great day!

  • A: The answer is simple but I have advice: →→t's not raw. It's cooked spinach that is frozen in a dense block package. However, temp changes and not talking care of the food safely could make you sick. About your smoothie question: You would have a difficult time breaking down a whole frozen block of spinach for a smoothie in a blender. Please don't do that lol it's hard as a rock. ☞1.Leave it out to defrost and check on it to see if you could break pieces off. Or... ☞2.Defrost BRIEFLY in the microwave using the defrost function. Don't wait until it's streaming hot. I recommend the former. If you use heat, you can add ice (not too much). Once you realize the best way to break it up, I recommend breaking up the entire dense block after you use what you need OR (IMHO) the most efficient way is to bulk blend smoothies with your other ingredients and then freeze it. If anything is left from just the spinach, you should reseal it in pieces FROZEN because you can get sick from leaving it out. I hope that helps.☆

Q: Is the spinach grown in the USA or Mexico?

submitted by Katie - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi Katie. Thanks for your interest in our Chopped Spinach. Conagra Brands is largely a North American company with most of its preparation facilities in the U.S. While we have preparation facilities in Mexico, Canada, Italy and Argentina, those facilities largely service the international demand for our products. Approximately, 95 percent of Conagra Brands products sold to consumers in the U.S. are prepared in the U.S. Additionally, most of the ingredients that are used in Conagra Brands products are sourced from suppliers in North America. Whether they are based in the U.S. or elsewhere, we are able to ensure consistent quality of our products year round. Thanks again, and have a great day!

Q: Do I need to wash it before cooking it??

submitted by Nyvi - 4 years ago
  • A: Hi there - washing is not a necessary step prior to cooking. Our chopped spinach should remain frozen until you're ready to cook thoroughly. Thank you

I don't like spinach so that's probably why I didn't like this. My kids did though.

I'm very disappointed to see brown pieces in the spinach. I buy this spinach every year for the holidays because i like the quality. This year every package I bought is full of stems and brown pieces. Again I'm disappointed.

Luckily, I broke apart portions of the semi-frozen block of spinach, and found three pieces of wood! It was nothing else other than wood chips that three of us believed it to be. SO, check your spinach before cooking.

I buy this frozen, chopped spinach frequently for cooking. There’s a lot packed in there. My 2 issues: it’s frequently out of stock with no other brand alternative and WHY is there no organic option?? Spinach is one of the dirty dozen vegetables that should only be bought organic. I hate thinking about how much pesticides lace this. Get with the times and make an organic option.

There was a dead ladybug in one of the packages of frozen spinach I purchased which I failed to notice before mixing into the ricotta for a lasagna, thus ruining both. So unpleasant.

Solid frozen block

AA - 4 years ago, Verified purchaser
I like being able to shake a little bit of spinach out of a bag to add to different dishes. This spinach is frozen completely solid in a block, so that not an option. That really limits its use. I had to throw the whole thing in a pot, and even then, it took forever to break down/thaw.

It's the only frozen spinach I will buy because it is always a lovely color green, tastes fresh and never covered in ice crystals because the packaging has a foil like lining that prevents any freezer burn, odor absorbance and helps it to last must longer than other brands

I enjoy using frozen spinach in my spinach artichoke dips, it's just important to let it thaw first and squeeze the extra liquid out first. Birds eye has delicious frozen spinach and at a decent price too. It's as close to fresh trading as a frozen spinach can get.
