Bluebeard gets a well-deserved, very nice Blu-ray release.

For this collector, anytime a PRC genre gem gets a Blu-ray release it’s time to celebrate. Despite a less-than-perfect video presentation, the overall package is great and I’m very happy with my purchase. Blu-ray video and audio quality: Kino touts a “2020 HD Master by Paramount Pictures - From a 4K Scan.” While having a recent 4K scan is always welcome, when the source material isn’t great there is a limit to how good it’s going to look. The Blu-ray image is somewhat soft and lacks fine detail. Speckling, tiny scratches, and other signs of wear and tear are common. Yet it still retains some organic and film-like qualities. I think Paramount and Kino should be lauded for their work. The audio is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0ch and there are optional English subtitles. The running time is 1:11:46. Blu-ray special features: Two new commentary tracks, one with Greg Mank and Tom Weaver (they take turns speaking, with Greg taking the lead), and another with David Del Valle. I’ve listened to each one, and they’re both very interesting, entertaining, and incredibly well researched. Tom, Greg, and David are all seasoned and polished commentary veterans, and they really help to elevate the replay value of this Blu-ray. Also included are eight trailers for other Kino releases. Despite no trailer for Bluebeard, three of the trailers are for other Edgar G. Ulmer films. Reviews for the past Bluebeard DVD releases from All Day Entertainment / Image and Roan did not receive high marks for their video and audio quality. While I don’t own either of those DVD’s, I’m confident this new Blu-ray is a solid improvement. The two commentary tracks elevate this release into five-star territory.
