Book Synopsis

A relatable personal finance guide that gives a fresh take on how to control your impulse spending so you can stick to a budget and pay off debt, without the guilt and shame of traditional financial advice--from the hosts of the beloved Frugal Friends podcast.

There's a lot of noise out there about how to spend (and not spend) your hard-earned money. But what if you made financial decisions based on what you value--instead of what others are telling you to value?

This is the empowering approach Jen Smith and Jill Sirianni, hosts of the Frugal Friends podcast, want you to take to improve your spending habits. They believe you can value anything (yes, anything!), whether that's a daily latte, fancy dinners out, or vacations. But, despite what social media is saying, you don't value everything.

The Frugal Friends' wisdom comes from personal experience: Jen paid off $78,000 of debt in two years without a six-figure income, while Jill has a background in social work and downsized to an RV to pay off student loans. Together, their advice is both relatable and actionable.

In their debut book, they share a plan for sifting through what's not important to find the things you truly love spending money on. You'll learn how to

Analyze your current spending and identify what you valuePrioritize your values when you can't afford everythingIdentify the root causes of your impulse spendingMake your habit changes stick long-term

From credit card and student loan debt to the rising costs of childcare and homes; it has never been more important to get control of your spending. Jen and Jill show you how to do it in a way that's healthy, not shameful, while exploring topics like overconsumption, self-worth, and the insidious history behind our consumption-obsessed culture.

If you want to reach your goals and feel good about your finances, Buy What You Love Without Going Broke offers a holistic approach to reshape the way you think about spending money.

Short version … If you are married and have struggled to find a financial plan that suits you and your partner, read this book and follow this podcast. It’s not a marriage book, anyone can read it and I hope many people do; I just found it to be a very helpful tool for us on our journey. LONG VERSION … It will help you understand what deeply drives your financial desires, give you tools to better understand your partner’s desires and learn how to prioritize it all, giving all the things proper value for the season you find yourselves in. These tools can be used in any and every life season because let’s be real, life seasons change, finances shift (and change) but knowing ourselves, what we value and how to honor that is a skill we should utilize every day. This book helps you do that in a relatable, attainable way.

Feels like chatting with friends

I have been listening to Jen and Jill on the frugal friends podcast for a couple years now, and every time I listen, I feel as if I’m just sitting down and chatting with friends. No judgement, kindness, and so fun. I have tried several approaches to finances over the years, and it wasn’t until I came across these awesome ladies that I felt like I was finally figuring it out. As a real life person who struggles to stick to financial plans that don’t feel like they are practical to attain, the concept they introduced of the “radical middle” was awesome. I have a husband, pets, and kids and learning to tailor a budget and goals that still allow me to live and make mistakes was a game changer to actually staying on track. And THEN, these lovely ladies dropped a book. It was amazing. I loved that it felt just like tuning into the podcast, like I was chatting with my friends. It was so fun to read, and the personal touches and stories are what makes it enjoyable, and relatable. I loved that they approach finances as something that relates to the heart instead of just cold hard facts. Facts and numbers are part of my financial picture, but incorporating a new viewpoint that has taught me to focus on what I love, and my dream has just added a whole new level to my financial understanding and journey. I am so grateful for these ladies who really get it, and understand that finances are so much more than numbers. I absolutely loved this book, and would highly recommend it to any of my friends, whether they are frugal or not!

Finances for Real Life Humans!

I’ve read a lot of finance-related books and this one is breath of fresh air - the radical middle, as the authors refer to it. Most finance books tout extreme changes, whereas this book really takes into account humanity and what it means to be human in all its complexities. Before I read this advanced copy, I preordered it because I also listen to the authors podcast - I highly recommend that too - and finally felt at home within the financial aspect of my life. Though, as explained, the values-driven practice can be applied across all areas of life. I’m inspired and ready to embrace this wholeheartedly. The writing is good, the layout is good, the analogies and stories are all helpful in understanding concepts and practices and why the authors recommend this way of living life. Your money is your power!! So so good!!

Money, we all spend it but so often we question ourselves on the how we do it. Reading this book will definitely help you deal and work with those thoughts. These two ladies guide you through "values based spending"; a game changer for those of us who want to deal with spending and finances in a positive and healthy way. The podcast is amazing as well.

I loved this book so much. It’s a breath of fresh air from other personal finance books. The focus is not on budgeting or baby steps and instead is on understanding values and all of the things that trigger spending. If you already have your budget, this book is the next step to think more about spending habits. It’s worth coming back to reread and reference Jen and Jill’s words (the writing is non-judgemental) for a reminder when I feel like shopping. One of the biggest takeaways: retail therapy can feel like the one thing we can control when things are chaotic.

A Modern Take on Wealth Building

Sherrie - 4 months ago
I’ve been following Jen and Jill for over two years and love their modern approach to finances. What if your financial decisions were guided by your values? What if you stopped to use those values when you had the urge to impulse spend? That’s what was different for me when I read their new book. It brought my personal life and personality to the topic of my finances and wealth building strategies in a new way. It made me stop and really search my soul for why I spent my hard-earned money on purchases that would only give me a nano-second of thrill and happiness. I crafted a new Why and followed their How to set up a long-term plan for wealth building, not short term feel-good stuff. I highly recommend this book and Jen and Jill’s amazing podcast Frugal Friends. Change your approach – change your net worth!

This book is extremely relatable- explains how someone feels when they are not making the progress with their goals that they think they should be able to accomplish, by sticking to a budget, removing all fun from their life, and still living up to societies expectations. It’s important to note, you don’t even have to be on a debt free journey to have take aways from this book. What we do not realize is spending is a skill, how and why you buy something is going to be the deciding factor on if YOU are doing what’s best for YOU compared to what’s best for society. This book helps us figure out what is important to you, what are your values, how do you want to live your life and satisfy your values in the different seasons of your life. It gives you the tools to work through and process your old habits to form new habits. I listen to their podcast and Jen & Jill’s personalities shine in this book. You can tell they have lived through the process and continue to grow with the process. You laugh and cry, live and learn through the book. I highly recommend this book because it gives you the information to learn and grow and has you think through the process in the lightning rounds so you are able to start the process right away instead of forgetting about it.

Practical Guilt-free Advice

Jacqui D - 4 months ago
I had the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book, and it has already been incredibly eye-opening and personally beneficial! Unlike traditional personal finance books that focus solely on saving more and spending less, this one takes a refreshing approach. The authors focus on aligning your spending with personal core values. The concept of determining what your values are, what you want to spend your money on and planning to spend your money on the things that matter seems so simple but it's so impactful. What I appreciate most is their non-judgmental tone. Jen and Jill walk you through the process, step by step, to reflect on where you spend money on and get you thinking about what you want to spend money on (notice I didn't say what you should spend money on because there’s no shaming or prescriptive advice here ). It's filled with financial empowerment and I've noticed a substantial improvement by following advice from the book. Under the financial mentorship of Jen & Jill, I have reduced our spending by 20% this month. Their personal stories are so relatable and illustrate their lessons with honesty, curiosity and intention. If you are searching for a practical, thoughtful way to improve your finances without feeling overwhelmed and guilty, this is a must-read. Be sure to also check out their Frugal Friends podcast too! It's filled with fun and insight.
