About the Book

"In this powerful novel about the cost of ambition and success, a legendary athlete attempts a comeback at an age when the world considers her past her prime-from the New York Times bestselling author of Malibu Rising. Carolina Soto is undeniably fierce. She is determined to be the best professional tennis player the world has ever seen. And by the time she retires from the game in 1989 at the age of thirty-one, she is just that: the best. She has shattered every record and claimed twenty Slam titles. And if you ask Carrie, she is entitled to every one of those victories. After all, her dad-a former champion tennis player himself-has trained her for this since the age of two, always emphasizing, "We don't stop for one second until you are the best." Which is why it is infuriating when Nicki Chan arrives on the scene six years later and ties Carrie with twenty Slams. Just like that, Carrie's championship record is slipping through her hands. And she can't let that happen. So at thirty-seven years old, Carrie Soto is coming out of retirement to defend her title. Even if the sports media says she's too old to be playing professionally. Even if her injured athlete's body doesn't move as fast as it once did. Even if it means trusting her father to coach her again after he betrayed her all those years ago. And even if the fans don't want the cold, heartless "Battle Axe" Carrie back. In spite of it all: Carrie. Is. Back. She will return for one final season to prove to the world that she is the all-time champion. Because if you know your destiny is to be the best, isn't it your right to keep fighting for it?"--

Book Synopsis

In this powerful novel about the cost of greatness, a legendary athlete attempts a comeback when the world considers her past her prime--from the New York Times bestselling author of Malibu Rising.

Carrie Soto is fierce, and her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular. But by the time she retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. She has shattered every record and claimed twenty Grand Slam titles. And if you ask Carrie, she is entitled to every one. She sacrificed nearly everything to become the best, with her father, Javier, as her coach. A former champion himself, Javier has trained her since the age of two.

But six years after her retirement, Carrie finds herself sitting in the stands of the 1994 US Open, watching her record be taken from her by a brutal, stunning player named Nicki Chan.

At thirty-seven years old, Carrie makes the monumental decision to come out of retirement and be coached by her father for one last year in an attempt to reclaim her record. Even if the sports media says that they never liked "the Battle-Axe" anyway. Even if her body doesn't move as fast as it did. And even if it means swallowing her pride to train with a man she once almost opened her heart to: Bowe Huntley. Like her, he has something to prove before he gives up the game forever.

In spite of it all, Carrie Soto is back, for one epic final season. In this riveting and unforgettable novel, Taylor Jenkins Reid tells her most vulnerable, emotional story yet.

If you love tennis then read this book. Each chapter was about a tennis tournament and the book was boring. I loved other books by this author.

I knew nothing about Tennis before reading this. The characters Taylor Jenkins Reid brings to life couldn’t be any more different from me, yet she has this gift that makes each one seem so relatable, so human (Even when I didn’t much enjoy the writing style/format, like with Daisy Jones & The Six). They are simultaneously ordinary in what motivates, frustrates, angers them and special in what they accomplish. Carrie Soto, a tennis star past her prime who decides to come out of retirement to defend her record of most wins, is no exception. Within the first few chapters, I was invested. “When did I lose that? The delight of success? When did winning become something I needed in order to survive? Something I did not enjoy having, so much as panic without?” This quote really stuck with me. If you’re a perfectionist who has high standards for themselves, I’m sure you’ll relate to Carrie Soto. Even if, like me, you’ve never played Tennis a day in your life. The chip on her shoulder that motivates her resonated with me. There is a lot of Tennis, which got a little repetitive at times, but it’s not about that. This book is about a person who dedicates her life to one goal that consumes her, and how that affects her relationships. The Tennis stuff was cool, though, regardless. I learned a lot of stuff I would have probably never known without this book, but it never felt like reading an instruction manual. Everything flows well and I flew through this book quickly because I couldn’t get enough.

Welp. I did not expect for that book to speak to my soul in ways I can’t even explain. This book is an intimate character study of what it means to be the “greatest” at something. The pressure, the drive, the grind. It’s about being true to yourself. It’s about learning that change is okay. It’s about the deepest griefs and the brightest joys, and how they can co-exist. It’s about what happens when we tie our self worth to something we can’t control. It’s about winning, and losing, and being your best every day. It’s about relationships, especially that of father/daughter. And, yes, it’s about tennis. And it’s messy. And I LOVED it. Listen, I love Daisy, Evelyn and Nina so much. When Malibu Rising came out, I declared it to be my favorite TJR to date. But, y’all. Carrie. Carrie is it. She’s it. I can’t. Taylor Jenkins Reid’s writing truly keeps getting better with each and every book - I highlighted SO much and will be going back to reference it. I’m so excited for you all to meet Carrie. Happy pub day to this incredible book, and thank you so much to Ballantine Books for the gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review - the way I shrieked when I opened that package. Sorry, neighbors.
