After members of her coven are murdered, sixteen-year-old Esmy moves across the country with her parents to master her neglected craft in order to find the killer and protect her coven.

Book Synopsis

In this queer, paranormal YA graphic novel debut from the author of Some Girls Do and the illustrator of Wonder Woman: Warbringer, a young witch races to solve the grisly supernatural murders of her coven members before the killer strikes again.

"[This] gorgeously illustrated tale mashes together murder mystery and witchcraft." --Nerdist

Emsy has always lived in sunny California, and she'd much rather spend her days surfing with her friends or hanging out with her girlfriend than honing her powers as a fire elemental. But when members of her family's coven back east are murdered under mysterious circumstances that can only be the result of powerful witchcraft, her family must suddenly return to dreary upstate New York. There, Emsy will have to master her neglected craft in order to find the killer . . . before her family becomes their next target.

Coven is a lovely graphic novel about a teenage witch (Emsy) and her family move from California to rural New York to rejoin their coven after a brutal attack on their family of witches. I loved this premise and the artwork! I'm glad this story was told in this format because it works really well. Esmy, our main character, emotes so well over the illustrations. You can read her so well and she shines on the page. I enjoyed flipping through this vigorously and then flipping back a few pages to look at it all over again! Besides the format, the plot holds pretty well. Esmy is a likable character and you can feel her frustrations with her situation and consequently the frustrations other characters have with her too. We get a good sense of who the characters are, what their magical abilities can do and how they work. Ben was a sad character to work with but he had some moments and ultimately it's him trying to get his family back, in a unfit way. Overall the story felt very Sabrina in high school, only Sabrina was a surfer girl before the witch part. I also appreciate the diversity and LBGT representation in this novel with multiple characters. My only critique was that it was quite a bit of build up for a quick ending with a somewhat obvious villain. And for as much time as we spent building up this story it still felt like we were missing something vital to the story. I wish we could have had a flashback sequence to really get a sense of the tragedy or even a picture of Ben's family so we could put faces to these people that were senselessly destroyed. It was a quick read, but it's perfect for the spooky season and I would recommend it!

Three things; Queer love. Our main character being a secure gal. A power that holds great responsibility. What more can I ask for. If you want a good october witchy read, pick up this graphic novel, it'll knock your socks right off. As a fellow artist, I found the color pallet addictive and I loved the detail of the pages in this graphic novel. My fingers became itchy from the excitement of anticipating what the next page would show me and what colors would be presented or if there would be a new color pallet. And found it quite astoundingly addictive with pondering how the next page would makes itself match the story. Safe to say, I wasn't disappointed. And I had no dissatisfaction. I really enjoyed; the story, the pages, how the characters were presented and drawn along and with with story. The cover is totally gorgeous and gave very mysterious vibes. I loved the contrast of the blue and red. It's totally eye catching. I recommend this highly to everyone as it can be enjoyed by multiple groups of peoples.

I love the cover it's very pretty. The title and rest of the cover is what caught my attention. This Graphic Novel takes place in Upstate New York. One thing I loved was the illustrations in this Novel. Graphic Novels are something out of my comfort zone to their a little harder to get into because I prefer to leave it up to the imagination. But I really liked the story. It's sad what happened to Ben's parents and I understand Emsy's frustration with moving and being the new girl as that was me a lot. I loved the ending it was very unexpected.
