I purchased thi product to fill nail holes on my outside deck stairs. I waited for product t change color then prepared and painted. 2 days later I noticed the nail holes were showing through. I scratched the area and the product was crumbling. I now have to clean out the holes, fill with a product I have used before and repaint.

Thank you for posting your review on DAP Plastic Wood-X Latex Wood Filler. Plastic Wood-X is not designed or marketed as a "waterproof" product. As indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "Exterior applications must be coated with latex or oil-based paint or solid color stain”. The only way that the product would behave as described is if there was moisture exposure. This means that water is entering the patch through the paint or bypassing it (from the edges or from underneath). Because you did not provide enough information on your application conditions, application surfaces, surface preparation or application technique, we are not able to provide more specific product usage/corrective guidance in this format. Should you wish to provide this information, so we can better address your concerns and/or to provide more specific use guidance, please feel free to contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477.

AMAZING Product for crown molding

AMAZING PRODUCT! Installed crown molding and used this product to fill the nail holes and where the MDF molding joined up. The only exception is that I used caulk for the corners since it will expand and contract to some degree. This stuff is super easy to apply using only my finger and wet wipes to smooth it down. Next, I used a very gentle sanding and touched up the paint. The crown molding turned out flawless and not a single joint is visible!! Could not possibly be happier with this product!!

Used this outside with great results. Don't know why people say not waterproof, it rained for 3 days after I installed first layer. No runs, discoloration, or damage for me. Dries hard but easy to finish with a putty knife and 150 grit sand paper. Will definitely use this product again!
Product is leaving stains around the filled holes

We have been using this product to fill brad/screw holes in ply wood. It dries nicely and sands nicely, however it seems to be leaving pink or dark stains in the wood grain around the patch. We've sanded through the top layer of plywood trying to get rid of the stain. We would like to stain these boards with light colored stains or clear varnish, but the dark spot remains.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We are sorry to see your low star review on DAP Plastic Wood X All Purpose Wood Filler. As indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "2. Match wood filler color to finished wood. Test wood filler, stain and finish combination on a small area first to ensure desired stain color. 3. If wood is to be stained, stain before filling with wood filler. Then use stain to develop desired final finish. Please follow stain manufacturer’s instructions for application." Based on your commentary, it would appear the referenced application guidance was not followed. At your convenience, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you about your project/application and to offer some additional finishing guidance.

Most of the complaints I see is from people not familiar with dealing with puddy. If it is lumpy add some solvent (Polish remover ie Acetone) or is lumpy and has solvent mix it well. The thickness is the key to what project your working on. I used it on rifle stocks, desks, tables etc. just use some common sense and TLC.
Product will not accept stain.

Product states that it is Stainable and Paintable. This is not true. The plastic wood will not accept stain.

I used it to repair some faults on my shed that has had some severe weather damage over several years and that's my own fault...I didn't paint when I knew it needed attention. I used Plastic Wood to repair cracks, divets, and general stuff. My problem is that it takes only moments for the stuff to dry in the sun's heat and slight breeze. When it gets that way, only moments after the can is opened, it's hard to use. It's too dry, it crumbles terribly and hard to get deep into cracks. What do I do???

Thank you for posting your feedback. We are not clear as to the reason for your low star review, given that your commentary appears to indicate that you were satisfied with the product. Thin applications, applications subject to higher temperatures/lower humidity, dry/absorbent application surfaces and/or application areas with high air circulation will dry at significantly faster rates. At your convenience, please contact DAP’s Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you regarding your post.
Don't buy this product! It doesn't bind to the wood.

Six months ago, after carefully following the directions, I used fresh DAP Plastic Wood-X to fill holes, caused by woodpeckers, in the cedar railing of my outdoor deck. The product dried okay and I was able to sand it a few days later. My plan was to stain the patches and cedar railing in the Sprint. Well now it's Spring, and the snow has melted here in Western NY, and I've sadly discovered that the Wood-X patches have absorbed moisture softened: I can stick my fingernails right into the patches and also easily scrape them off the wood railing with a putty knife. I now need to remove all my work of six months ago, then refill the gouges with another product, prior to staining the railing. I've always found DAP products to be excellent in the past--until this time. Very disappointing. The product is absolutely no good for outdoor use.

I had a big crack on my daughter's dresser. I love that dresser so much. That is the reason I bought the wood filler to see if we can repair it as bring it back to its glamorous look. I used Dap wood filler on this project with my husband, It was easy to apply. We waited a little longer than described on the product's instructions to sand it. It sands easily and we painted it afterward. Completely satisfied with this product
the stuff in the can is a lumpy runny mess that dries soft

Like others complained. The canned product is a lumpy mess suspended in acetone. Not putty. The instructions say it dries in 15 minutes. No way. It turns to putty in that time. Two hours later it is pretty stiff, but dents very easily under thumbnail. And scrapes to powder with thumbnail. I sure am glad I tested first, and did not commit it to my project. It would have destroyed it.

Thank you for posting your feedback. We're sorry to hear about your experience with DAP Plastic Wood. Based on your commentary "The canned product is a lumpy mess suspended in acetone" would appear to indicate that that you did not mix the contents of the product as indicated on step 4 (package label guidance). While we would expect that the product would feel firm to the touch after drying for two hours, it would not be at full performance that early. At your convenience, please contact DAP's Technical Customer Service Department at 888-327-8477 so that we can obtain some additional information from you and so that we can arrange to provide you with a product replacement.

I'm fixing crown moulding, baseboards, etc. that the builder's painters made a horrible mess of. They didn't match up the crown joints very well. They have covered up the terrible work with acres of caulk. I spent weeks getting all the caulk off and then used this to actually make it appear that the crown fit together properly. Was actually able to sculpt a new moulding profile on the outside corners. Had to build it up with maybe three coats, but it sanded beautifully and you can't tell the moulding was installed badly. So easy to sand. Had been using Elmer's but have switched to this as I do tons of detail work and this sands so much more easily. Use 120 for first pass and 150 for final pass. Going to get more tomorrow!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I opened the container and from the looks and texture it didn't seem as if it would do the job. I tried it on a wood table that I have and I loved it! I had to use 1 coat let it dry and applied a second. I can't wait to find more uses for it.
