As indicated on the product package label and supporting product literature: "Exterior applications must be coated with latex or oil-based paint or solid color stain”. The only way that the product would behave as described is if there was moisture exposure. This means that water is entering the patch through the paint or bypassing it (from the edges or from underneath). Because you did not provide enough information on your application conditions, application surfaces, surface preparation or application technique, we are not able to provide more specific product usage/corrective guidance in this format. Test wood filler, stain and finish combination on a small area first to ensure desired stain color. 3. If wood is to be stained, stain before filling with wood filler. Then use stain to develop desired final finish. Please follow stain manufacturer’s instructions for application." Based on your commentary, it would appear the referenced application guidance was not followed. Thin applications, applications subject to higher temperatures/lower humidity, dry/absorbent application surfaces and/or application areas with high air circulation will dry at significantly faster rates. Based on your commentary "The canned product is a lumpy mess suspended in acetone" would appear to indicate that that you did not mix the contents of the product as indicated on step 4 (package label guidance). While we would expect that the product would feel firm to the touch after drying for two hours, it would not be at full performance that early.
