Designed with Passive Bass Radiators Definitive Technology is well-known for its use of passive bass radiators.

Passive bass radiators enable subs to play as loud and low as a ported sub without unwanted port noise distortion. And they deliver a smooth frequency response like a sealed sub but with the port-like ability to play louder and lower in a smaller enclosure.

Descends 3XR (Three Times Radiators) Architecture pairs two passive bass radiators with the subs active woofer (see above). Within this unique architecture both passive radiators and the woofer are the same size creating three times the bass radiating surface area compared to a single-woofer ported or sealed design. The Descend DN8 8 subwoofer therefore creates the same amount of bass as a 10 ported or sealed subwoofer. And so on.
