XXXXX “[This] carved tablet, called a stele, replicates the original museum artwork in cold-cast resin before being hand-painted in the rich colors of the Egyptian palette.” The above comes from the seller’s website for this exquisite Egyptian wall sculpture. The seller, Design Toscano, is a good source for statues and other historical and antique replicas. This particular piece is a Design Toscano exclusive. The domestic scene depicted (dating back to circa 1350 BC) is painted on a stele. In Archeology, stele is spelled stela or stelae (pronounced “stee-la”). A stela is an upright stone slab that is often inscribed, carved, or painted. Hundreds of them have been discovered. They are the most important source of information for ancient Egyptian family connections, occupations, and funerary beliefs. The domestic scene painted on this stela shows the Pharaoh, King Akhenaten, Queen Nefertiti, and their two infant daughters. Akhenaten (who reigned circa 1352 to 1336 BC) inherited his throne from his father, King Amenhotep III. Initially, he too, was known as Amenhotep but his growing dedication to the sun god known as the “Disk of Aten” persuaded him to change his name to “Akhenaten” (meaning “Living Sprit of the Aten”). On this stela, the Disk of Aten shines down on the royal family. Note that Akhenaten’s god represented the light of the sun (as depicted on the stela by the sun beams) rather than the actual sun itself. I especially liked the vibrant colors and attention to details on this stela. Finally, I only have two minor quibbles that have nothing to do with this beautiful piece itself. First, Akhenaten’s name is unfortunately incorrectly spelled on Design Toscano’s website. Second, I did not receive a packing slip with my order. In conclusion, this is an exquisitely beautiful Egyptian piece. It is thus of little surprise that it is displayed at the Agyptiches Museum in Berlin! This stele is a perfect replica of the original on display at the Ägyptisches Museum in Berlin. Akhenaton dates from 1350 BCE. and this wall sculpture makes an excellent grouping with other Toscano Egyptian theme plaques. I am very pleased with it and highly recommend it to other Egyptophiles.
