Book Synopsis

A selection of 120 drawings from the holdings of the Graphic Art Collection of Augsburg's Art Collections and Museums provides a comprehensive overview of the art of drawing in German-speaking countries in the period from 1600 to ca. 1780. A particular focus of the collection is on the art of drawing in Augsburg, a city that was one of the most innovative art centres in Germany during the 17^th and 18^th centuries. Designs for ceiling frescoes and altarpieces, models for copperplate engravings, sculptures, and album pages are on display, as well as portraits and landscapes. Artists such as Johann Rottenhammer, Johann Heinrich Schönfeld and Joseph Werner epitomize the high quality of drawing in 17^th-century Augsburg, while Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner, Johann Georg Bergmüller and Johann Evangelist Holzer are representative of the 18^th century.

About the Author

Gode Krämer, author and art historian, former head of the Graphic Art Collection and the Picture Gallery of Augsburg's Art Collections and Museums. Numerous publications on the art of drawing in Augsburg and southern Germany; currently preparing the catalogue raisonné of Johann König.

Peter Prange, author and art historian, works as a freelance curator, author of catalogues of German drawings in the graphic art cabinets of Hamburg Kunsthalle and Salzburg Museum, Rossacher Collection. Numerous publications on the art of drawing in Germany and Austria during the 17^th and 18^th centuries.

Christof Trepesch, author and art historian, managing director of Augsburg's Art Collections and Museums. Curator of numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad, author of many publications on art from the Middle Ages to the 20^th century.
