My husband has been wanting to learn to DM and I've been wanting to get a better understanding of the game so I can play better. This guide is super helpful and breaks things down in a simple and intuitive way.

This book helped me and my friends make characters and sort out arguments when it came to the rules. Also inspired me for items in my other campaigns.

a random DND player - 3 years ago
This book is awesome for every DND player. Just get the book. It's a well-made hardcover with full color pages and tons of relevant info to everyone's campaign. It is worth the price I paid (about $23 or $24 I think) and it's just a nice thing to own. My one issue with this order is the small-ish dent on the top back cover. My other books in this order were fine probably because they were wrapped in plastic. Maybe the dent came before shipping. I'll never know, but the dent on my otherwise perfect book will always be there. I would upload images of the book but unfortunately Target website says "Sorry, your file could not be uploaded."

This book is the primary reference a player needs to get started in the Dungeons and Dragons hobby. It's a great introduction for any aspiring player, and continues to stay relevant even after many sessions of play. From making a character to using skills, the majority of cases can be found on these pages. Because it is a reference book, it's not exactly meant to be read straight through (although you can). When you need to know how a specific rule or process works, you usually look it up and continue playing. Grab a set of polyhedral dice, a character sheet (available free online), and a pencil, and you're ready to go!

When I heard that the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons was being released, I just knew that this edition would be great. I grew up with 2nd edition D&D as my babysitter, teaching me about how wizards start with only 4 hit points and how rolling a twenty sided dice could allow me to fend off goblins, all within a story of my own making. I learned math, reading, social skills, and more from D&D. Finally, those days are back again. This edition is centered on the "Three Pillars of Adventure" which are exploration, social interaction, and of course, combat. Everything can be broken down into 3 types of dice rolls: attack rolls, ability checks, and saving throws (which all work using the same twenty sided dice mechanic). Honestly, with this book and the monster manual (and maybe the starter set), all I need to do now is find some people who know how to play pencil and paper tabletop role-playing games appropriately. This could keep you entertained for years, it's a great read, and has great art.
