Q: Is there an actual fair-trade certification from a third party anywhere on the label? I see the certified organic by Oregon Tilth but nothing to verify the companies claims on being fair trade. Thanks for any help.

  • A: Great question! The only product we have currently certified is our coffee which proudly bears the Simbolo de Pequeños Productores or SPP. It is the first Fair Trade farmer owned certification. You can read more about this certification here: Equal Exchange is a pioneer of the fair trade movement and was the first fair trade certified coffee company in the US. Since that time, we have tried various ways to best align certification with our mission of supporting small-scale farmers through authentic fair trade. Over the years we have had several certifications on our products, but we watched as the system shifted away from the original goals of Fair Trade, which we believe is creating market access for small-scale farmers on fair terms, and become far more focused on building a brand and sales, often to the benefit of large multi-nationals while at the expense of the organizations and farmers who helped create the system. Therefore, in 2015 we decided to remove consumer facing certification from our products. In summary, we have been less than excited by our experience with various certifiers and are investing more heavily in building our own brand, all while fulfilling and going beyond the original commitments we made with those pioneering small farmer organizations who created the first fair trade certification system. All of our cacao and sugar farmer partners are certified by Fairtrade International.

It tastes good and it’s very creamy. The quality seems good. I put it in 2 parts water and 1 part milk, and it’s still really creamy. However, it’s not that chocolatey. I’ll get the dark chocolate flavor next time.

It’s disgusting in water. In milk it’s pretty good, but much stronger than Swiss miss. I like Swiss miss better, but like that this is organic. A little difficult to mix there’s always a little powder floating on top.

Thanks for your review and we're sorry that our hot cocoa was not your favorite. To fully dissolve the mix, we suggest adding a small amount of boiling water or your chosen hot liquid first to stir in with the powder and make a slurry, then add the rest of the liquid for a smooth cup. We hope that this will help get you a yummy cup of cocoa.

Conflicting information about gluten

1 out of 5 stars
Thumbs down graphic, would not recommend
Smp247365 - 6 months ago
The product in my hand says nothing about containing gluten or being processed on a facility that processes, wheat or gluten. But – when I just looked at the website, I see that it was processed in a facility that deals with wheat. My son has celiac and is complaining of a terrible stomach ache after drinking some of this hot chocolate. The label on the container does not match the product information on the website, and it has caused an issue. Celiacs beware and Equal Exchange please advise.

Thank you for reaching out to us on this issue. At Equal Exchange we take allergens very seriously. Please know that this product is no longer manufactured on equipment that processes products containing tree nuts, wheat or eggs so the details on the can that you have in hand are correct. We are in contact with Target and are having the website updated with the correct information and visuals. Because this is an allergen issue, please contact us at foodsafety@equalexchange.coop so that we can follow-up with you directly.

At first it tastes so good, and reminds me of making homemade single serve with just Hershey’s unsweetened cocoa and sugar. Then, oh my! There is a hideous aftertaste that reminds me of straight cocoa from the can, no sugar! I would like to buy fair trade but this is a waste of money. And expensive!!
1 reply from Equal Exchange CS Pro's team - 4 years ago
Equal Exchange is proud of its high quality, organic ingredients, and we are sorry that you did not have a positive experience with our Organic Hot Cocoa. The third ingredient in this mix, organic cocoa powder, has a naturally rich, dark chocolatey flavor profile, so for a sweeter mix, one could try using more than the recommended serving size of 3 tbsp of cocoa for 8 oz of hot water, or for a creamier mix, try substituting hot water for hot milk. For an even richer chocolate flavor experience, we recommend trying our Organic Dark Hot Chocolate, which contains small flakes of dark chocolate.

I like this cocoa. I pre-measured the water before heating and (in a cup) added level tablespoons of cocoa. It tasted great. I added a splash of Half & Half for the heck of it -- still tasted great. It mixed smoothly (no lumps) and quickly. I love that it's organic and fair-traded. I'm not a connoisseur of hot chocolates -- I've had very few in my life -- mainly because of the (unnatural?) ingredients. But I like this, like the ingredients, so I will (most likely) buy more. It's expensive, but, all things considered, worth it, I think.
