Q: how do you change battery

submitted by robbie - 1 year ago
  • A: There is a pull out tray on the side . . . it can take a little bit of force to open it to the point where it seems like you are going to break it.

Exactly what I was looking for in a smoke detector

5 out of 5 stars
Izzy - 4 years ago, Verified purchaser
I wanted to replace my 10 year sealed battery smoke detector that lasted 3 years. It was very difficult to find a smoke detector that requires changing the batteries every 6 months in California. It was worth looking for it because the 10 year battery unit would not be silenced. We pushed the deactivation button and it still beeped. We had to take a hammer to it.

False alarms

1 out of 5 stars
Purchased 2 of these. The first one triggered false alarms after 7 years. 2nd one is only 2 years old is also triggering false alarms. The detector is in my bedroom - so not humid and not dusty. Will contact First Alert, but will also be switching to a different brand.

check the manufacture date

2 out of 5 stars
KDude - 5 years ago
I ordered several. According to the manufacture date on the back of the alarm, one was already 7 months old when I received it. So I paid for 10 years of protection and got 9 years 5 months.
1 reply from FirstAlertProductExpert team - 4 years ago
Thank you for your feedback. We apologize for any confusion. You are correct, the date you see on the back of your device is the date of manufacture. Your detector has a 10-year warranty based on when the device was purchased. Recommended by a fire safety engineer. Easy to install. 10 year life is good. But with only having it a short period of time cannot review its effectiveness.

Small and unobtrusive. It has multiple mounting holes so it fits the same mounting screw pattern as the other major brand smoke detector we are replacing because of age. This senor has two AA batteries which are considerable less expensive than 9 volt. They are easily replaced by opening a sliding drawer rather than picking at a compartment cap and a battery contact pad. Cannot verify the operation of course and hope to never have to. However this has high ratings from multiple sources. It has two types of sensors which is recommended by reliable testing companies.

I wish this also had a carbon monoxide detector as well. It would be great to just have to put up one device!

We purchased 5 of these to update our 1960s house to current code (where you should have alarms in every bedroom, and at least one per floor). After a lot of research, I settled on this model because of the 10-year life (some are only 3), dual sensor (both photoelectric and ionization, which sense two different kind of fires), and reasonably priced. My husband installed them without an issue and they are easy to test and silence. My only complaint (and why I gave 4 stars instead of 5), is that I really wish it came with a 9V battery versus 2 AA batteries. It's so much easier to keep packs of 9Vs on hand while the AAs tend to disappear quickly.

I've only had this alarm in my home for about a week. At this point, it seems to be working well, but it's hard to tell this early in the game. Here's why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5: I had previously installed a First Alert alarm in my hallway. I was hoping that this new one would match the mount I had already screwed to the ceiling, since it is the same brand. But the new one is a different size. So I had to drill new holes.

Hard to tell until we have a fire, but the alarm was very easy to test and install. The mounting set-up makes it easy to use old brackets if replacing an outdated system.

Worked ok for almost 2 years, now it has stated Falsing. Just like virtually every other product from this company. Nothing we enjoy more than being repeatedly awaken in the middle of the night to false alarms. Battery is fine and there is no dust in it. Garbage

This uses 2 AA batteries. The company representative said they should be replaced once per year.. Our old alarm took 9-volt batteries -- and needed 2 of them. This alarm will be much cheaper to use.

I purchased and installed 3 of these in different parts of the house. After about 4 months one of them alarmed. No smoke, steam, nothing apparent. The batteries are strong as per battery tester. Figured it was a fluke. However, about 1.5 months later the same thing happened. The other 2 are behaving themselves. I'll take it up with first alert now.
