Book Synopsis

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

With her popular blog, Finding Cooper's Voice, Kate Swenson has provided hope and comfort for hundreds of thousands of parents of children with Autism. Now, Kate shares her inspiring story in this powerful memoir about motherhood and unconditional love

When Kate Swenson's son Cooper was diagnosed with severe, nonverbal autism, her world stopped. She had always dreamed of having the perfect family life. She hadn't signed up for life as a mother raising a child with a disability.

At first, Kate experienced the grief of broken dreams. Then she felt the frustration and exhaustion of having to fight for your child in a world that is stacked against them. But through hard work, resilience and personal growth, she would come to learn that Cooper wasn't the one who needed to change. She was. And it was this transformation that led Kate to acceptance--and ultimately joy. In Forever Boy, Kate shares her inspiring journey with honesty and compassion, offering solace and hope to others on this path and illuminating the strength and perseverance of mothers.

Look for Kate Swenson's new book, Autism Out Loud - a moving narrative of resilience and love in which three mothers share their experiences and learnings about life alongside autism.

Review Quotes

"Until the late twentieth century, autism was hidden in plain sight. Now it's a public health priority and focus of extensive research. However, it remains a black box. While we wait for answers, extraordinary people like Kate Swenson, through their dedicated and resourceful efforts have taken it upon themselves to create a nurturing environment in which children like Cooper can grow and thrive. Forever Boy will be an inspiration to all who face the challenge of caring for special needs children." --Dr. Jeffrey A. Lieberman, Lawrence C. Kolb Professor and Chairman of Psychiatry, Columbia University

"Forever Boy is a candid journey through the beauty and battles of having a child with autism. Kate blends wit and wisdom in an unapologetic account of marriage, motherhood and unconditional love. She captures the struggles, expectations and reality all parents face while advocating for their children. It's a story of unexpected loss; enduring hope and most importantly, newfound understanding. It should be mandatory reading for teachers or for anyone who has children or is thinking of having children." -Colin Balfe, founder of Love What Matters

"Kate Swenson has pulled the curtain back to show first-hand the challenges of life with a child with severe autism. For those who are in the dark about the disability, or know little about it, her story will be an eye opener." --Valerie Gilpeer, co-author of I Have Been Buried Under Years of Dust

"This wise, inspiring book will appeal to not only parents of children with autism, but anyone interested in stories about the selflessness and endurance of maternal love. A candid and hopeful addition to the personal literature on pediatric autism." --Kirkus Reviews

This was lifetime of the most inspiring books I have ever read. It’s honestly astonishing to me how strong Kate and her family is. This book kind of hits close to home since my older is pretty sure she has Asperger’s, and she’s just now realizing how it’s affected her life and her relationships. It’s also taught me to have more compassion towards any person with disabilities, even if they look completely fine. It was so inspiring to read about how Cooper was able to get past a lot of difficulties and even start speaking a little bit. This book was so easy to read because I wanted to know more about Kate and her journey with Cooper. There were many times in the book I almost cried cause I could feel her pain even though I’m not even a mother myself. I also wanted to cry many times for Cooper and how unjust this world is for people with severe autism. Overall I think this book did a fantastic job spreading awareness about autism and disabilities in general. I personally think everyone should read it.

Mother’s Heartfelt Memoir Is Essential Reading

“Forever Boy” is essential reading for ALL community professionals, teachers/educators, therapists (of every kind), childcare professionals, parents and caregivers.
This is CRITICAL reading for all moms who are persistent in their pursuit of a better quality of life for their children; moms who wish to support their peers and their children’s peers, regardless of the exact (known or unknown) diagnoses (or lack thereof) of their own children.
This book is a true gift to all those who are affected by ASD or are wanting to understand what this life is truly like.
Any of us can be affected by disability at any time, and as moms we are part of a local and a global caregiving community, connecting like never before, thanks to the internet.
*
We all need to read Kate’s book and look at life beyond our own homes. We all need to have a heightened sense of social justice and compassion, in these modern times, in my humble opinion.
As autism moms, we can undoubtedly all relate to Kate. I believe we are a persistent bunch of mothers who are fiercely protective of our own children (as we should be).
I can only speak for myself in saying that finding your understanding community will turn your life around for the better!
It means everything to know that you are no longer alone in your caregiving journeys.
I now fully understand how powerful this really all is….Let this book be your friendly guide.
*
Lastly, be prepared to be reminded of all the tough emotions, all the outrageous things, and all the truly hard things that take place as a mom travelling along this autism journey.
You will cry along with Kate at certain parts of this book too; you are getting an inside, raw and honest look at another primary caregiver’s autism journey.
However, this will be fine as you will leave feeling a new sense of hope, peace and contentment .
This book is the gift of beautiful truths; equally as beautiful as the gifts from having
autistic people entering our lives in the very first place!
This book takes you on a journey in which you will also feel all of those unexpected gifts; ones you could never have expected to ever feel in your lifetime.
Kate Swenson, in addition to being a remarkable mother, is an accomplished writer and public speaker. I wish to stress that she is also a true gift as a tireless mentor to so many.!

Kate has written a beautiful memoir. This is an honest and raw look into the secret world of parenting a nonverbal child with severe autism. Kate’s honesty and transparency is both heartbreaking and triumphant. We are invited to come alongside her as she journeys through unbelievable hardship and grows to love and appreciate a life she never thought she’d have. Kate’s story embodies all that motherhood requires - sacrifice, tenacity, resilience, and unconditional love.

I have a “Cooper” his name is Curtis. He is blonde and beautiful and severely effected by autism. It is “woven through him” too. Forever. I can not thank a person enough more than Kate Swenson for being so brave, honest, graceful, funny and caring. Not only has she wrote a book for the whole world to read to learn about our special children and families. She also wrote it for families like hers to not feel alone. I felt so validated, not alone(boy was I so alone those first 5 years and still trying to navigate it at 6.5) and I feel more joy. I have learned so much following her blog Finding Coopers Voice the past 4.5 years but this book I learned so much more. I am so happy I can give this book to friends and family to learn more about my son and others like our family. You have a gift Kate. BUY THE BOOK people! Share it and help others! We can change the world with this book. Thanks again Kate. We love you! -

Forever Boy, A Must Read For All

I ended it with so many feels I had to put it down and sleep on it before I could write about it. Wow. Just wow. Validation. Kate, you have written your heart and shared it with the world. The vulnerability is raw, and that's what makes this a unique and critical piece to our society where we sugarcoat the truth. Because of pieces like this and mothers like you,our kids will have a seat at the table of life. This is it. It's everything. A must read for all. Well done, friend. This book shares the truth of what it takes to truly fight for what is strong in your mom gut even when even those closest to you make you feel doubt deep in your bones, what it that fight leaves in it's wake, and the hope for a future. This is a story of a journey, a hard, beautiful, messy, painful, breathtaking, journey. One that doesn't end. It took some of the weight off, reading it, I felt like I was suddenly in a room with a friend. A friend who was going through so much of what went through, at the exact time we went through it. A friend who not only was there for me, but was there with me. Oh man, if I would have had this 10 years ago. It put into words what I have felt over the past decade in my relationships with friends and family. I think reading this has made me feel braver. This is the real deal, folks. This is it. This is what many are too afraid to talk about it, to ask about, to be a part of it because it's hard, and it's real. Kate put those words down on a page, a voice for so many unheard voices. Fantastic. Kate has done it for our children who deserve nothing short of the moon and the stars. She has done for those who think they are the only one deep in the trench. Sharing and talking about things like this, well it changes you. For the better. And the world needs to be better. Kate, you've given so many caregivers confidence to share their family's story.

I remember so vividly after my daughter’s diagnosis of autism all I wanted was someone to tell me it was going to be ok. Forever Boy finally gave me what I yearned for so many years ago…HOPE! This book was everything I expected it to be. Kate’s words inspired me, they allowed me grace for my anger and sadness but most importantly that gave me hope and a new perspective on life. This book is not just for parents, it’s for families and friends, educators and therapists. It is truly a book of hope that everyone should read.
