From Sir With Love - by Ken Edgecombe (Paperback)

The author says that he liked nothing better than when the teenagers in the girls’ school where he was the Chaplain started a lesson by saying something like, “Sir, i know this is not your topic for today but how do you know…….” From many years of teaching and preaching he has a fund of stories with a suitable one for pretty well every question. His style of telling a story and giving the girls the dignity of coming to their own conclusions I found very attractive. On the other hand he was very clear about the depth of his faith as a follower of Jesus.

'From Sir with Love: Glimpses of Faith through a Classroom Window' I found 'From Sir with Love' to be an excellent guide to addressing many thorny questions, such as: Does God really exist? Why do bad things happen if God loves us? Do science and religious beliefs ever meet? These issues and many others of long-time and current interest, were posed over twenty one years, by girls at Wellington's St Margaret's College, to Chaplain Ken Edgecombe. Here, Ken's gift for serious research, colourful anecdotes and a caring respect is evident in the wisdom he's assembled in this book, from a lifetime of interacting with curious, developing minds. But be assured that this book, as it was for me, is meaty grist for all ages. It's also an excellent resource for groups large and small, for generating discussion around what are critical issues that may well be barriers to people forming a framework to build on. I'm so aware of how an individual's anxiety about what to believe, can crowd out peace and happiness and undoubtedly 'From Sir with Love' is an excellent counter to that situation. Alan Knox Auckland
