During her time as a spy for the Red Room, they mentally programmed her with certain mental commands, which can bring her under control, should she ever turn rogue. This was used by Nighthawk to put Black Widow into a comatose state.

Who is Natasha Romanov ? Despite her origins as an agent of evil, Natasha Romanoff has become a force for good in the world of covert intelligence and super heroics. Like her namesake arachnid, Romanoff is stealthy, precise, and absolutely lethal. She is the Black Widow. Black Widow made her first appearance in the comics through an Iron Man storyline debuting in 1964. The earliest version of “Nat” was that of a Russian spy, villain, and temptress. Her origin began as the formulaic damsel in distress, and much of her character based off sexist stereotypes from the 1960's.
