About this item

Highlights

  • Fawkes served as Albus Dumbledore's messenger and his constant companion, forming a close bond with the old wizard. Fawkes was also affiliated with Harry and the members of the Order of the Phoenix and was the inspiration for its name.
  • Dumbledore was the only thing tying him there essentially, so without him he was free to go.
  • Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix, becomes a symbol of Harry and Dumbledore's shared loyalty, and of how Dumbledore's support of Harry inspires Harry's bravery.
  • Fawkes are not a possession or a belonging. They are not a pet to be owned
  • "It's a shame you had to see him on a Burning Day," said Dumbledore, seating himself behind his desk. "He's really very handsome most of the time, wonderful red and gold plumage. Fascinating creatures, phoenixes.

Description

What are Fawkes ? Fawkes was a highly intelligent phoenix and Albus Dumbledore's animal companion and defender. Fawkes was instrumental in helping Harry Potter defeat Salazar Slytherin's basilisk in 1993, and he came to Dumbledore's aid in fighting Lord Voldemort during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. How did Dumbledore get Fawkes ? He was likely a gift from Newt to Dumbledore who, while brilliant, was not an expert in magical creatures, nor did he seem to have the time to train a phoenix. Instead, it was likely Newt who acted as Fawkes's trainer before giving him to Dumbledore.
