About the Book
"A Dell trade paperback original"--Title page verso.Book Synopsis
A restless young journalist with big dreams interviews a Hollywood heartthrob--and reunites with him ten years later to discover exactly how he feels about her in this sexy and engrossing novel "You will absolutely devour this book. It's filled with delightful banter, hot romance, and a love story that's worthy of the big screen."--Kate Spencer, author of In a New York Minute and host of Forever35 Then. Twenty-something writer Chani Horowitz is stuck. While her former MFA classmates are nabbing high-profile book deals, all she does is churn out puff pieces. Then she's hired to write a profile of movie star Gabe Parker: her number one celebrity crush and the latest James Bond. All Chani wants to do is keep her cool and nail the piece. But what comes next proves to be life changing in ways she never saw coming, as the interview turns into a whirlwind weekend that has the tabloids buzzing--and Chani getting closer to Gabe than she had planned. Now. Ten years later, after a brutal divorce and a healthy dose of therapy, Chani is back in Los Angeles as a successful writer with the career of her dreams. Except that no matter what new essay collection or online editorial she's promoting, someone always asks about The Profile. It always comes back to Gabe. So when his PR team requests that they reunite for a second interview, she wants to say no. She wants to pretend that she's forgotten about the time they spent together. But the truth is that Chani wants to know if those seventy-two hours were as memorable to Gabe as they were to her. And so . . . she says yes. Alternating between their first meeting and their reunion a decade later, this deliciously irresistible novel will have you hanging on until the last word.Review Quotes
"Funny You Should Ask is the kind of fascinating, intimate character study that feels like reading about real people. A breezy, addictive romance--I couldn't put it down!"--Rachel Lynn Solomon, author of The Ex Talk
"Funny You Should Ask is a smart, sensitive story full of love and longing--not to mention a totally swoonworthy hero. It's also a page-turning peek into the celebrity machine. Framed by one infamous weekend and its fallout, the book goes beyond the glossy surface to thoughtfully tackle questions of perception versus reality, and which can hurt more: the limitations other people place on us, or the ones we place on ourselves."--Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan, bestselling authors of The Royal We and The Heir Affair "Elissa Sussman's adult debut promises a glamorous celeb romp, but offers a double-whammy with thoughtful, emotional depth. As the narrative jumps back and forth in time, the truth of what happened between Gabe and Chani unfolds and a romance blooms--cautious, sweet, and sizzling with tension. . . . A beautiful, fun, heartfelt love story that I couldn't put down."--Maurene Goo, author of Somewhere Only We Know "Alternating between past and present, YA writer Sussman's first novel for adults slowly lays out the events of her characters' first meeting and how much has changed in the decade since. The result is a sexy, sometimes emotionally fraught tale that is both funny and romantic and that will appeal to fans of Sophie Kinsella."--Booklist, Susan Maguire "Sussman makes her adult fiction debut with a smart and sexy tale of second-chance love. The story thoroughly satisfies on a romantic level and packs an emotional punch with genuine characters."--Library Journal (starred review) "Young adult author Elissa Sussman may be poised for a breakout hit with her first novel for adults, Funny You Should Ask. . . . Sussman's smart writing and firm control over the narrative steadily lead you on to the next page, and the next page, and the page after that."--BookPage "Sussman's thoughtful adult debut explores the connection forged between an insecure Los Angeles writer and a charming movie star. A decade after Chani Horowitz's profile of Gabe Parker went viral, the two are reunited for another interview. . . . Sussman's musings about fame, success, and the bonds between people elevate this fun and charming narrative. This has ALL THE MAKINGS OF A HIT."--Publishers Weekly

I gave this 4.5 stars. I know it took me a while to read and that was not the fault of the book but all the challenges that I like to do that sometimes get in the way of my reading. I loved this book. I totally love how Elissa Sussman captured the Jewish girl Chani's character. Totally on point. I so enjoyed taking the trip to Montanta to see Gabe's hometown and meet the important women in his life. All through the story my heart went out to Gabe. I guess I am perceptive in my reading sometimes and figure out why characters are written the way they are and to do the things they do. This was a wonderful story and I hope that Sussman goes on to write other adult novels. This was a first time adult novel for the author and it was truly wonderful. It was a joy to read from beginning to end and again, I apologize for the not completing it sooner. This is a fun book. A sad book. A book that had me alternatively in laughter and tears. If you want a good clean book that you can say "aaahh" to at the end this one is for you.

It was a good book not a great book. Enjoyable easy read, a little prolonged and all over the place in the beginning. Towards the middle it connected more and the part leading up to the end were good but could’ve been better. Not a bad one, just not a soul changing one. I would to add that the cover art is so cute!
Great beach read!

I had to force myself to finish the book, it was sort of drug out in the beginning and I didn’t really get into it until I was 3/4 of the way done with it. I couldn’t connect with the main character very well and I could never figure out how to say her name either.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like interviewing a celebrity, especially one that you may or may not have had a crush on for a long time? Imagine you got the opportunity, what kind of questions would you ask them? What would it be like? Well in Elissa Sussman’s, “Funny You Should Ask”, she created this story where that happened. Apparently this story was inspired by a interviewer who did a piece on Chris Evans (or so I’ve heard from others). This story dove into the story of Chani and Gabe during that memorable interview and years later they were reunited again to re-live that moment in time again. Before reading this book, I imagined Hollywood vibes, a sneak peek into the life of an actor, imagining the kind of questions one would ask during this kind of interview. Once I started reading, it became much more than your typical interview. Chani went into her interview with Gabe thinking it would be straightforward and hopefully give her the opportunity to showcase her talents in getting more important pieces to write. Then through the interview, it seemed like Gabe was not only asking Chani questions of his own, but seemed reluctant to answer questions that Chani had lined up for him. The interview from the past (the first/ original interview) revealed a lot about Gabe’s personality and also how he wasn’t the stereotypical “pretty, clueless, country boy” that people in Hollywood assumed him to be. The interview from both past and present highlighted relevant details in Chani and Gabe. I liked reading the interview from the first time because, it established the first time Chani and Gabe met, but also how their initial interview didn’t start off exactly how Chani envisioned. Told through “now” and “then” chapters, you’re able to see the events that occurred earlier ten years ago and the present with Chani and Gabe. A lot of the story was enjoyable and I found it sweet and endearing seeing how despite many years having passed, Chani and Gabe’s connection was still there. Another aspect of the story revolved around the “what if’s” from we could have happened earlier on or things that were left unanswered for both Chani and Gabe. Thankfully everything was cleared between the two when they were together again and able to fully open up about everything. This story did mention Gabe’s struggles as a recovering alcoholic and over the years he was finally able to stay sober. While the story was told through Chani’s perspective, through Chani speaking with Gabe, it was clear he made strong strides with his recovery to sobriety and put both his physical and mental health first over the years after seeking help. Overall, I loved the story, I loved Chani and Gabe’s relationship, and while I wished they could have gotten together initially 10 years ago, in a way everything worked out the way it was meant to be. If you love the idea of Hollywood, celebrities, romance, humor, and a male lead to whom many have compared to as Chris Evans but make him a fictional man.. this is the next book for you to read.
Lovely story

This is a fun story about a writer who is forever haunted/plagued/hung up on a feature piece that she did years before. Many years later their lives intersect again - reluctantly on her part. The story jumps around the timeline to the original interview, the intervening years and the present. While there were a few moments that felt a bit slow, overall I really liked the book. I prefer more realistic stories, so while this is about a "normal" getting together with a movie star, it is done in such a way that it is really just two people. There was a good range of emotions and definitely some funny parts. I received a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
