An alternative title for this series could be “Breaking Good”. It is in the same vein as Breaking Bad, but whereas that series told the story of a good man forced by circumstances to turn to a life of crime, Get Shorty relates how a crime syndicate enforcer goes legit in order to hang on to his wife and daughter. The actors, other than the the two leads, are relatively unknown but are uniformly excellent. The actress who plays crime lord Amara is simultaneously scary and sympathetic, a tough feat to pull off. The language is salty, but every expletive rings true, and although there is violence, it never seems gratuitous and is actually mild compared to other shows even on broadcast TV. The series is basically a ten hour movie, and I found it more enjoyable to binge watch over a couple of days than to wait a week for each installment.
