Description
In 2004, Gnarly Head began with a vision and vine. On a mission to create a serious Zinfandel, our winemakers journeyed to the famed vineyards in Lodi, California. These gnarled vines produce BOLD, POWERFUL and CONCENTRATED fruit flavors. Our Old Vine Zinfandel features aromas of blackberry bramble, and black raspberry with fruit forward flavors of dark plum and jammy blackberry supported by balanced acidity and supple tannins. Enjoy it with barbecue ribs and meaty burgers. Today, we bring that signature Gnarly style of big, authentic flavors to our full portfolio of wines, winner of over 100 Gold Medals.

Just picked up a 2nd bottle of Old Vine Zin & am currently drinking it as I write this review. I love that it's not sweet & is super easy to drink! I just had a bowl of spaghetti and it paired great with it. Perfect afternoon treat & pick me up!
Cause we done shared all of mine…

Straight up with no apologies given, I buy this and the other Gnarly’s because of the GD collab…call me a simpleton, I don’t mind…if the greatest band in the history of music is attached to a product I’m gonna dive in (not Dead & Co. though). This is by far my favorite of the GD label varieties. Goes great with steak and other vegetarian dinners we enjoy out here in the hills of Vermont. Might be getting it more frequently now that I woke up facing the prospect of Trump 2.0. Thanks for helping us through the worst election night in a hot minute Gnarly Head. Fond memories of driving through Lodi and CA wine country one afternoon, long ago… RIP PHILLIP CHAPMAN LESH! NFA…
Unique taste and most moreish!

Bought a Grateful Dead bottle first. Totally knocked out by the most delicious, multi-layered flavours. It's very hard to stop drinking the bottle once you start. This is my most favourite ever, ever American wine. So unusual and totally tasty. Roll it around your tongue as long as you can: the liquid disappears but the flavours linger and linger. I need to research whether I can obtain any in the UK.
A lot better than I expected

I have a gifted bottle: Gnarly Head, followed below by the gnarly tree-vine, then bottom left of tree and bottom right on tree respectively(red wine - vin rouge), then Vintage 2013, then Old Vine Zin, then Lodi Zinfandel. It has a gold/brass-y look on the cap and neck wrap. It doesn’t look like what you post here. Any feedback is more than welcome, I am about to gift it away!

Hello! Based on your description, it sounds like you have a bottle with a previous version of our packaging. Either way, it's still amazing wine. Cheers!

I bought this randomly from a grocery store shelf. It's now my favorite wine. It's soft and smooth, and I don't get tired of it. Not too sweet. And at an amazing price point. Thanks!

I just discovered this wine this very month and I’m so thrilled! It has knocked my former favorite wine from the top spot and claimed the throne for itself. Whether it’s the low sugar content or what, this wine is not only incredibly tasty and satisfying, not too sweet or dry, but it doesn’t give me the “hangxiety” that this newly peri menopausal lass was getting too accustomed to expecting. TMI, but it’s reality! I suggest you grab a bottle of this yourself, man or woman, young or old, and enjoy! Perfectly rounded and lovely. Praise Zeus!

I bought this for my lady and we fell in love with this Zin. As deadheads how could we resist the Artwork of our favorite band on the label. As the lyrics to the song go.. "We can share the women, We can share the wine"....But to be honest, its so good we have a hard time sharing it... we will be buying this by the case ... and than maybe sharing ...

I have searched for a red wine for a long time. Gnarly Head is suitable as a table wine late evenings and also works great with barbeque and meat dishes. I really feel this is my favorit for life now. Did not know about the story behind the wine before i entered this website but now it is even cooler and more intresting.

I show this wine during staff treining in 4* hotel i Cracow PL. Blind testing. Everyone said it had to be a blend. I showed the label, a moment of silence and after a while- wow!

I love Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin but tonight's bottle of the Lodi '18 wasn't my favorite. What I usually love about this wine is the versatility (it's a great alternative to Pinot noir with a typical Thanksgiving turkey, plays well with pork, and is a great option for "let's throw meat on the grill" also) and especially love the ability to convert people of all palates to an affordable and unique bottle. One of the things I generally love is the balance of jamminess and tannins which makes it so versatile. Maybe my 'buds are off tonight, but this bottle of '18 was entirely too sweet for the ribeye I'd paired it with. I may play with a bacon & onion (literal) jam with some spice for charcuterie because while this year wasn't my fave for this meal, it's still a nice wine that won't go to waste. And I will 100% keep an eye out for other years - don't let my review scare you off, just be aware the '18 is maybe a bit sweeter than other vintages. (I generally chill a bit, then open and let it breathe & come up closer to - but not at - room temp while I cook.)

Purchased from the Wine Society here in the UK. A well made, thoroughly enjoyable straight forward Zinfandel. Fruit driven with a touch of spice, well balanced with soft tannins. To be drunk now rather than a keeper. Accompanied a rib-eye steak perfectly and brightened up a wet May evening in England as we emerge from our Covid induced lockdown. Well done!

My wife and I have been enjoying Gnarly Head Old Vine Zin for 10 years now starting with a bottle of 2010. Loved it then and we love it now. My only question is: how do I find a bottle of 2011 (our favorite year) vintage?
1 reply from Gnarly Head team - 4 years ago
Thank you for being a fan! Unfortuately, our 2011 vintage is completely sold out, but we hope you'll celebrate your 10 year anniversary of drinking Gnarly with a bottle of 2020 Old Vine Zin. Watch for its release later this year! Cheers!
So tasty and smooth, yet rich.

I was a Cabernet Sauvignon drinker for a couple of years. I stumbled upon your wine (the artwork on the bottle drew me in) and I fell in love. This Zinfandel is so good, so smoth, yet has that bite that I love about Cabernets. I can't wait to try more of your wines.

I usually drink Cabernet Sauvignon, but was looking for something different the other day. I noticed the artwork first on the bottle, and then saw it was a Zinfandel. It's been a long time since I had a Zinfandel. Wow! The price is fantastic for such a flavorful wine. I'm not good at describing notes in wine, but it's dry without being puckery that Cabs can be , and full of fruit flavors. This could be my new favorite wine!

Sounds like you found exactly what you were looking for. Something different that you can afford to drink on any occasion. Cheers to that!
