A coming-of-age story that follows the meteoric rise of singer Amber Young as she navigates fame in the late-90s and early-2000s era of pop music superstardom

It is 1997, and Amber Young has received a life-changing call. It's a chance thousands of girls would die for: the opportunity to join girl group Cloud9 in Los Angeles and escape her small town. She quickly finds herself in the orbits of fellow rising stars Gwen Morris, a driven singer-dancer, and Wes Kingston, a member of the biggest boy band in the world, ETA.

As Amber embarks on her solo career and her fame intensifies, her rich interior life is frequently reduced. Surrounded by people who claim to love her but only wish to exploit her and driven by a desire for recognition and success, for love and sex, for agency and connection, Amber comes of age at a time when the kaleidoscope of public opinion can distort everything and one mistake can shatter a career.

With the captivating style of Stephanie Danler's Sweetbitter and the raw honesty of Jennette McCurdy's I'm Glad My Mom Died, Isabel Banta's debut novel, Honey, redefines the narratives of some of the most famous pop icons of the '90s and 2000s. It reimagines the superstars we idolized and hated, oversexualized and underestimated, and gives them the fresh, multifaceted story they deserve.

Review Quotes

"Honey is a sexy swagger of a debut. The ambition and grit of its heroine are matched by the dexterous smarts of its writer, and it is deeply satisfying to see the mistreated pop princesses of the millennium get the respect that they--as complicated humans--deserved all along."
--Emma Straub, New York Times bestselling author of This Time Tomorrow

"Isabel Banta has delivered an all-access pass to the early-aughts pop world of my dreams in the form of this gorgeous, powerful, and unapologetic romp of a novel. Dripping with sweat, sex, and yes, honey, the character of Amber Young will forever redefine how we think of the perils of stardom, paparazzi, and becoming who you're meant to be despite it all. Effervescent and full of energy, the lessons in Honey are as needed today as they were in the age of Y2K pop. A rare, shining star of a debut."
--Chelsea Bieker, author of Godshot and Madwoman

"Honey parts the shimmered curtains of Y2K pop stardom and ushers us to a place beyond the schoolgirl/jezebel binary: the rich inner world of a young woman discovering her own depth and life force, authentic sexuality and artistic intelligence. Show up for Honey with your sticky notes ready, because there's much to bookmark here: not only the deftly written heat, but a hundred keen and quotable observations about creating a life of truth and wholeness."
--June Gervais, author of Jobs for Girls with Artistic Flair

"Honey was everything I was hoping it would be and more. Beautifully defiant, persistently empathetic, and the writing itself is absolutely crystalline."
―Courtney Summers, New York Times bestselling author of Sadie and I'm the Girl

"It's a delightfully bubblegum novel of hot summer nostalgia that also lands some serious blows to the patriarchal mores of a cultural milieu we still haven't fully shaken off."
LitHub

""While memoirs from former teen stars are starting to expose behind-the-scenes exploitation and abuse, this fictionalization brings readers close through the kind of rich, immersive worldbuilding and gut-punch depth of feeling that only a masterful novelist can provide...A provocative, quietly foreboding examination of the teen idol industrial machine, arriving at the perfect cultural moment."
Kirkus

"This delightfully nostalgic debut full of millennial-bait Easter eggs charts early aughts teen pop-princess Amber's rise to stardom. Pressured by the demands of music producers, the media, and fans, she shakes off the need to please and finds her truest self. Honey is delicious."
--PEOPLE Magazine Summer 2024 Best Beach Reads

Honey is the coming-of-age story of Amber Young, a singer who is scouted at a young age to join a girl group called Cloud9. It is the 90s, the era of girl pop stars and boy bands. We follow Amber's rocky childhood, her ups and downs, her relationships, her meteoric rise to stardom and her journey to self-valuation and ownership of her voice and her talent. At many times heart wrenching, Honey addresses the objectification and manipulation of women and girls by the media, the double standard, tabloid lies, misogyny, power dynamics, and male control of the music industry. There is a nostalgic vibe as Amber's life is set against the events of the late 90s/early 2000s, which resonate with many of us. I loved Amber's friendship with fellow pop-star Gwen and how they supported each other even when the media tried to tear them apart. I would have liked more time with Amber in her forties, more than just a Wikipedia article at the end. Honey is a well written, addictive and immersive music story.

"I'm starting to think that no unscathed kid has ever entered this industry. You have to have some emptiness, some cavity that needs filling." -Amber Young Honey by Isabel Banta is a fantastic throwback to the 90's pop music era. Following Amber Young as she sets off to gain stardom after being discovered at a school talent show, This novel immerses the reader into the underworld of the music industry and all the highs and lows that come with trying to rise to the top. Intially I thought this book was going to be a little "bubblegum-ish" but it quickly dives deep into the struggles Amber faces internally, the difficulty of developing and sustaining relationships of any kind, and unpacking the baggage of your past in order to look to your future. This was an unexpectedly intriguining novel! Great summer read!

Pick up this book!! My millennial heart loved it! Honey by Isabel Banta was a fantastic read! I am extremely surprised this a debut novel. Amber Young is a rising pop star in the 90s who was first discovered by Angela Newton. It takes Amber a few years to end up with Cloud9 where she meets her best friend Gwen Miller. This is where Amber meets the famous band group ETA and comes in contact with boy band idol Wes Kingston, who she realizes looks so familiar. This novel follows her music career from childhood to early adulthood and so on. This book covers how unfair women are treated by the media and the impact they have on how other people view those that are in Hollywood. Amber was portrayed differently by the media due to her body being more developed than other female artists in the industry. Amber had to suppress who she was and had to be who her label wanted her to be in order to sell her to the people. Amber found herself despite the public’s perception of her, the complex relationships she came across and the search for parental acceptance. She gained strength and determination to improve her career. I like that the book was set up as a timeline for each chapter. It gave a better vision of when events were happening. Thank you to NetGalley and Celadon Books for providing me with a chance to read this ARC in exchange for my honesty review.

I loved this book! Think Daisy Jones, but late 90s/early 00s pop. As an elder millenial, I felt transported back to my teens of being obsessed with pop groups and artists just like described in this book. Though I did feel that some of the relationships and character development weren't fully fleshed out, I did find myself rooting for the main characters. I wish it went more in depth on some of the heavy subjects that are touched on, almost just in passing, and how those truly affected the character. Overall, I truly enjoyed this and would highly recommend it to all my friends!
