About the Book
On a remote island estate, Annaleigh Thaumas, the sixth-born of twelve sisters, enlists the aid of an alluring stranger to unravel the family curse before it claims her life.Book Synopsis
Step inside a fairy tale.--Stephanie Garber, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Caraval Get swept away by the New York Times bestseller that Melissa Albert, author of The Hazel Wood, calls eerie and lovely. As one by one her beautiful sisters mysteriously die on their isolated island estate, Annaleigh must unravel the curse that haunts her family. Be careful who you dance with... In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed. Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor with her sisters and their father and stepmother. Once there were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls' lives have been cut short. Each death was more tragic than the last--the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge--and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods. Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that her sister's deaths were no accidents. The girls have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn't sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who--or what--are they really dancing with? When Annaleigh's involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it's a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family--before it claims her next. House of Salt and Sorrows is a spellbinding novel filled with magic and the rustle of gossamer skirts down long, dark hallways. Get ready to be swept away. The cover art is very esthetically pleasing and the designs on the inside cover and the chapter headings are also pretty. The artwork is comprised of nautical designs that include seashells, starfish, an octopus, coral, sea horses and seaweed. Other than two grammatical errors/typos that I located throughout my reading process, I didn't have any issues with the writing. Going into this book, I didn't know what to expect other than I heard it was a retelling of the fairy tale "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" by the Brothers Grimm. I've heard of the original fairy tale before but I've never read it. Not sure if that is a good thing or bad thing but I'm not complaining because this was a whirlwind of a story. First things first, this author knows horror and the ways to creep out her reader. When I mentioned in the beginning that this book was a complete surprise, I meant the horror aspect. I wasn't expecting this book to have any horror at all. Her descriptions and the tension that she brings to her horror scenes are utterly terrifying. Several times throughout my reading process I actually had to put the book down and recollect myself because I was thoroughly spooked. The level of gore and eeriness in this book is on a level that I would not recommend this book for younger audiences. I enjoyed the world that this author created of living by the sea. It was easy to imagine and the atmosphere was pleasing to read about. By in large, I liked a lot of the characters in this book, which is hard to say nowadays. There is a mystery in this story that the reader gets to solve alongside our main character while also providing a little bit of romance too. As a reader, you question what is really happening in this book. Is there a curse on this family? Is there really magic afoot? Or is it all an elaborate nightmare had by a confused young woman? It was interesting to see how this book tied everything together in the end and fleshed out the villain(s). I will say that I wasn't a big fan of the epilogue in this book and could have done without it. The epilogue didn't ruin the book for me but it just felt unnecessary, in my opinion. Overall, this book was a great read and one that I would recommend. Just be forewarned that you may be looking over your shoulder every now and then. Mwahahahahahaha!!!

This book would have been great had target not sold it to me 40 pages too short. The book just ends on page 376 as if the rest of the pages just weren’t printed.
