Book Synopsis

Get practical tools and strategies for teaching AI across the K-12 curriculum with this accessible guide.

As AI continues to transform our world, educators have a responsibility to stay current with the changes, and ensure that students have the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in the future. Written by an educator who is currently teaching on this topic, How to Teach AI shares practical strategies and tools based on what good practice looks like in the classroom right now. Readers will build confidence in integrating AI into their curriculum so they can effectively prepare students for their careers.

Taking a friendly and accessible approach, the book covers a range of topics related to AI, such as machine learning, robotics and natural language processing, and includes examples of how these technologies are being implemented in different industries and their impact on education. The book includes a chapter dedicated to the ethics of AI, addressing issues around bias, intellectual property, student data privacy and more.

The book includes:

  • Ideas for using generative AI in the classroom and tips for writing effective prompts.
  • Activity ideas across content areas, including computer science, economics, literature, music and more.
  • Time-saving ideas for teachers, and study aids for students to explore.

  • Questions for reflection in every chapter.

Audience: Elementary and secondary educators and technology coaches

Review Quotes

School Library Journal, Robert Babirad

This book offers helpful strategies for teaching about artificial intelligence in classrooms across all grade levels and subject areas. Poth discusses how technology impacts society, and addresses teaching digital citizenship, bias, and ethics issues connected with AI. Assessments, ideas for lessons, class activities, and topics related to AI for class discussion are also included, along with thorough discussions of Generative AI and ChatGPT. An appendix of sample lesson ideas for all grades includes an interesting high school lesson about healthcare applications of AI and more. This book will be invaluable to school librarians and classroom teachers seeking to learn more about AI and to introduce this subject area to learners. Though the field of AI is vast, new, and emerging, Poth breaks it down into manageable and understandable parts and provides teachers with effective ideas about how they can immediately teach and apply AI concepts in their classrooms. Real-world applications of AI are also presented. Since the applications are not limited to one subject area or grade level, they are useful as a practical tool for teaching AI to a wide range of teachers, learners, school librarians, and anyone seeking to expand their knowledge of AI and AI instruction, and to add AI resources to their school library.
