About the Book

A National Book Award Finalist and instant "New York Times" bestseller--a poignant but often laugh-out-loud funny contemporary novel about a teenage girl who loses her sister and finds herself amid the pressures, expectations, and stereotypes of growing up in a Mexican-American home.

Book Synopsis

National Book Award Finalist!
Instant New York Times Bestseller!

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian meets Jane the Virgin in this poignant but often laugh-out-loud funny contemporary YA about losing a sister and finding yourself amid the pressures, expectations, and stereotypes of growing up in a Mexican American home.

Perfect Mexican daughters do not go away to college. And they do not move out of their parents' house after high school graduation. Perfect Mexican daughters never abandon their family.

But Julia is not your perfect Mexican daughter. That was Olga's role.

Then a tragic accident on the busiest street in Chicago leaves Olga dead and Julia left behind to reassemble the shattered pieces of her family. And no one seems to acknowledge that Julia is broken, too. Instead, her mother seems to channel her grief into pointing out every possible way Julia has failed.

But it's not long before Julia discovers that Olga might not have been as perfect as everyone thought. With the help of her best friend, Lorena, and her first love (first everything), Connor, Julia is determined to find out. Was Olga really what she seemed? Or was there more to her sister's story? And either way, how can Julia even attempt to live up to a seemingly impossible ideal?

I liked how it was relatable and interesting. It has a happy ending . I would like to say though that the main character complains a lot which can be annoying but overall I enjoyed this book.

A page turner at first I got annoyed but the repetition but the stubbornness is what makes Julia real!

Loved that as a Mexican daughter I could relate so much to this story, yet also understand why parents sometimes are the way that they are because of their experiences of having to come to a strange country and fighting for their future.

Loved this book. As a Latina I find it hard to find myself in any of the stories I read. But when I tell you this one totally had me reminiscing on my very own life. I think any Mexican daughter could relate to this story. I recommend it to anyone I know.

Super great book. Spanglish for sure. It shows the different kinds of outcomes that happen when a child grows up in the US with Mexican Parents the author manages to show you this with by creating different characters.

I'm not Mexican. I'm Asian. And I didn't grow up in the US. I came to the US for graduate school when I was 21. But I still was deeply touched by this story. I thought things are finally going to get better when Julia started to see a therapist. But no, bad things still happen. In fact, bad things and good things are all still happening. I especially like how the book ended: Life itself lies in front of Julia, happiness and pain, excitement and anxiety. I feel I can appreciate this story much better as an adult, but I'm not sure if it's a book I would want any teenagers to read. I guess to this point I'm more like Julia's mom, protecting kids from anything "bad".

Honestly, I was hoping for more. It does address some issues that first generation latinas can face. But I feel like there was no closure at the end. Like it was so heavy…Then, the end. I feel like you have a responsibility to the readers. To give closure or a feeling similar to it. This book was relatable but there was so much missing.

I was intrigued by this book when I first read the description in the back. I relate a lot to this book as a Mexican American daughter. I saw really good ratings and reviews for the book so I figured that I would read it for an upcoming English assignment. I'm pleased to say that I loved it and I agree with the reviews:) I enjoyed reading every page of this book because it's based in Chicago, it just hits different. The author really put her personal experiences to create a book that Mexican girls from all over the world can relate to. I feel like Julia and I had a very strong connection and I haven't felt that way in a very long time.

Being a Latina I was intrigued by the reviews and the premise of the book but I was not a fan at all. The style of writing and characters are all exaggerated making it seem unrealistic. The author is just trying too hard and I found myself being annoyed and skipping through. Mental health is not acknowledged much in Latino culture and I was reminded of my upbringing but once again I cannot get over how exaggerated everything is. Would not recommend!

I bought this book two days ago and it’s so interesting. It takes a while to get to the exciting part but overall if you are into chican(x) literature with a touch of mental health issues, this is the book for you. Overall, I love how I can totally relate to the main character because she lives in a Mexican household.
