I Walked the Line is a chronicle of first love, long-kept secrets, betrayal, forgiveness, and the truth--told at last by Johnny Cash's first wife, the mother of his four daughters. It is a book that had the full support of Johnny Cash, who insisted it was time for their story to be told, despite any painful revelations that might come to light as a result. Many myths and contradictions regarding the life of Johnny and his family have been perpetuated for decades in film and literature. Vivian exposes previously untold stories involving Johnny's drug addiction, his fraught family life, and their divorce in 1968, as well as the truth behind the writing of two of Johnny's most famous songs, "I Walk the Line" and "Ring of Fire." Supplemented by a never-before-published archive of love letters and family photos, I Walked the Line offers a deeper look at one of the most significant artists in music history. Here, fans and readers can experience the extraordinary account of love and heartbreak between Johnny and Vivian, and come to understand Vivian's dignified silence over the years. Through this elegant, revealing, and powerful memoir, Vivian Cash's voice is finally heard.Review Quotes

"We all thought we knew everything about Johnny Cash, but this book clearly reveals more secrets than ever before. In an age of email and IMs it is sweet to read the tender love letters a heartsore young man wrote to his very young girlfriend. They are full of tenderness and sweetness and caring. It is sad to see how once success, alcohol, and drugs enter the picture, everything changes. We live through the heartaches of their shattered marriage, his addictions, and a turbulent life. Vivian, the first lover and wife of this musical legend, tells the tale in a powerful way, and I am sure that all the readers will get as much from reading it as I did."
-- Ivana Trump

This book would be a lot easier to believe if Vivian Liberto, formerly Vivian Cash, who narrates the last couple chapters of the book--was not such a mentally damaged woman. No doubt whatsoever she was a sweet woman, a good woman in the church, and a woman that loved her children. I'm not saying she wasn't. And she didn't deserve to be left behind, especially in such a public way. But she is a mentally damaged woman, because she is unable to ever admit that Johnny Cash could be terrible. She blames the drugs, she blames June Carter, she blames bad friends. Vivian honey, your husband was not Jesus Christ. He was just as sinful as any other man. She places him on such a god like pedestal, no wonder to have him cheat on her nearly killed her. The pressure Johnny must have been under at home, knowing how dependent his wife was on him. Sounds horrific. I suppose June Carter could have been nasty to Vivian, and maybe she enjoyed Johnny pursuing her. Who really knows? I do know that Johnny loved chasing women, and even in the earliest photos of him and June, he was all over her. He probably needed very little encouragement. It's easy to feel sympathy for Vivian. What did she do to deserve any of that humiliation? Nothing. She got kicked around by Johnny, by the insane attention from the media, and the long tours. Then after being lavishly spoiled by her husband and his money in the early years, it all went to pot with Johnny abandoning her for other women. That was awful. But seriously, you wonder why this woman doesn't look at reality! No matter how wonderful he was starting out, he had everybody lying to Vivian even their accountant by the end of the marriage. Was that really all June? Or was that Johnny not wanting his wife to know what a bad husband he was? It wasn't June Carter who changed everything, it was Johnny Cash. He changed. I'm honestly relieved that Vivian was able to end the marriage and went on to have a life that made sense for her. She didn't have to deal with his relapses, with the constant attention. She got that peaceful simple life she always wanted. The only reason she didn't get to enjoy it was because she was bitter over the past. June didn't have an easy life with Johnny, but I think she had a secret way of making the best of it that Vivian did not have. And maybe June was the happier one for it. How sad. Vivian should have been the happier one. Sadly, I can't recommend this. It's too stupid.
