Description
Book Synopsis
A National Bestseller -- now in paperback! Is Atheism Dead? is a highly entertaining, impressively wide-ranging, and decidedly provocative answer to that famous 1966 TIME cover that itself provocatively asked "Is God Dead?" In a voice that is by turns witty, muscular, and poetic, Metaxas echoes C.S. Lewis and G.K. Chesterton in cheerfully and logically making his case, along the way presenting breathtaking--and sometimes astonishing--new evidence and arguments against the idea of a Creatorless universe. Taken all together, he shows that much we have assumed about the biggest questions of human existence is in fact dramatically outdated -- and is therefore in need of the most urgent reevaluation.About the Author
ERIC METAXAS is an author whose books have been translated into twenty-five languages. The host of a nationally syndicated radio show and the acclaimed conversation series Socrates in the City, he is a prominent cultural commentator whose work has appeared in the New York Times, the New Yorker, The Atlantic, and the Wall Street Journal. He lives with his family in New York City.Dimensions (Overall): 7.9 Inches (H) x 5.7 Inches (W) x 1.8 Inches (D)

I once again have this book on my wishlist, because I love it so much that I keep passing it on to others. The parts of the book that focus on science and archaeology are just so much fun to dig into. Some of the evidence for God was simply a refresher course of things I’d read or seen in Case for a Creator and the like, but a lot of the presented evidence was brand new to me . I love Eric’s reminder that faith does not require “checking your brain at the door”. What an interesting read!

After you read this book and have been presented the FACTS, you have two decisions: to believe or not to believe. Either way you can no longer stake your claim that there isn’t a Creator God.

Juxtaposing a question that the cover of a 1960’s Time Magazine asked, “Is Atheism Dead?” carefully asks an even more important question. Delving into scientific discoveries, archaeological finds and facing head on the question of whether faith and science can co-exist, Metaxes does not shy away from any of these topics. He clearly presents the evidence for the answer to his question of whether atheism is dead in light of these proofs. A readable text (even for non-scientific minds) that WON’T put you to sleep like many texts that deal with similar topics. Metaxes uses some fun and interesting words and word pictures that the average writer doesn’t use and he does it well. Perfect for reading silently alone or with a friend or family member…in our family we have done both and been challenged, educated and encouraged. A small note, for those who are staunch young-earth creationists, Eric takes a different tack and comes from an old-earth perspective. You might check out Geisler and Turek’s book, “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist” which covers just a smidge of the same scientific and archaeological discoveries from a young earth perspective. (Be careful though, you might find yourself nodding off with that one. :) ) You’ll need to revisit Metaxes’ book however for some history on atheism and famous atheists and their own journeys! If you are open minded enough however to take what you will and strain out the rest, I think you’ll really appreciate “Is Atheism Dead” by Eric Metaxes.

Metaxas never disappoints. If you’ve been wondering whether God exists, this book is a must read. If you believe that God exists, this book is a must read. And if you know God doesn’t exist, this book is a must read. Complicated science is made accessible by translating it into laymen’s terms. The discoveries from Biblical archaeology add more color and evidence to the case he builds. Don’t be deceived, though. Despite being an easy, engaging read, the substance of Metaxas’ case against Atheism should give any thinker pause. He respectfully challenges the arguments of modern atheists in a thought-provoking way. No matter your prospective, you’ll be glad you read this book!

Amazing book! I read it all at once. It weaves the science, biblical archeology, sound reasoning on the old atheism question, and every detail in between. I am giving out this book as gifts! Must read. Thank you, Eric Metaxas!

Eric Metaxas has done an excellent work assembling some recently discovered evidence that tragically does not seem to surface in our popular culture. The first third of the book covers the science supporting intelligent design of our universe and planet. The second portion covers the amazing archaeological discoveries in recent times that confirm the historical accuracy of The Scriptures. Finally he addresses search for truth and challenges the reader to seek it out with all diligence. Of course, sprinkled throughout is classic Metaxas humor with some footnote Easter eggs to keep the reader engaged. You will come away wanting to dive deeper into the subjects of real science and archaeology.

If you’ve ever wondered if God is real, this book is for you. Metaxas makes a lucid, compelling case that atheism is no longer tenable based on evidence from fields as wide ranging as cosmology, physics and archeology. I was fascinated and captivated with this read and whether you’re a doubter or a believer, you will be too. If you’re ready to counter the cultural myth that faith is a crutch for the weak, a fairy tale for those who want to cling to an imaginary afterlife, this book will arm you with facts that clearly point to a God — and not just to any God, to the creator described in the Bible. With this book as a guide, you’ll be able to speak confidently about why you believe and to give an evidence-based reason for your immortal hope.

Eric Metaxas has done it again. This book is fantastic! I was able to read the advance edition and I cannot wait to receive the hard copy. The book can be read in its entirety or each section can be read on its own. The section on archeology is fascinating. Understanding the major discoveries and how scripture is authenticated by each discovery is so exciting. As you read about the discoveries and digs, you will want to grab your hat and join an expedition. the material is presented in a clear and logical format. Christmas is coming and I will be gifting this to friends and family. If you struggle to defend your beliefs, you will find this book a great help. If you have friends or family who have doubts about the authenticity of the Bible, be sure to share a copy with them.

I have followed Eric for a number of years because I admire his ability to boldly say it like it really is and to communicate it in such a succinct and clear way. Therefore I was excited to read his newest book, Is Atheism Dead? He has not let me down. The main premise of the book is to challenge the 1966 Time Magazine article entitled "Is God Dead?" with the overwhelming evidence that No, God is not dead, but perhaps Atheism should be. The book is laid out in three sections: 1.) Scientific evidence, 2.) Archeological evidence, and 3.) An examination of the arguments from atheists. Back in 1966 scientists thought that cells were simple blobby things. Eric uncovers how mind-blowingly complex the simplest cells are, how incredibly fine-tuned our universe is. He presents stupendous numbers indicating the amount of time necessary to do what needs to be done—it’s straight-up impossible. Life, our place in the universe, and the laws holding it all together, are stupefyingly and astonishingly complicated. Eric moves on to how archaeologists have been uncovering evidence in the sands of the Middle East, which further confirms that the Bible's account is real and accurate. As time goes on, the case only becomes stronger for those with enough courage to be honest with the evidence. Finally Eric uncovers the ridiculous worldview that grounds atheism. There is no morality, no beauty, no love, no goodness inherent to atheism if we're just molecules in motion, a clump of cells with no purpose or meaning. It is shocking to remember the millions upon millions that have been absolutely slaughtered like animals in the name of atheism...because that’s all we are in that worldview. It's a no argument at all to compare the glorious God of the Bible to the complete emptiness of atheism and Eric doesn't mince words. Atheism is untenable.

Wielding his signature wit, Eric addresses the science developing for the past 50+ years, revealing that no serious person can confidently say "There is no God". Atheism is dead; science killed it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is like three books in one. I hope more people read this book to know what an amazing planet we are on and the perfection of our Universe by our Creator. Everything is just perfect for life on Earth here to exist. This has been proven via physics. The archeological proof of multiple biblical events including the burning of the city of Sodom is now confirmed. The heat at which the city burned is mind-blowing. I do not want to give everything away in my review. I absolutely loved this book. I am buying more copies as gifts for Christmas to family and friends that still have questions about proof that God exists.

Eric’s spiritual gift is to reel in the Uber-intelligent and make it accessible, not bringing the material down like a children’s book, but in lifting me up, cracking the door into a room to overhear great conversations. His Bonhoeffer book did this. The atheism conversations deal with gritty and great ideas. I loved being in this room, especially the science pages, for several refills of coffee. And who else is telling us about Directed Panspermia?!

Is Atheism Dead? was an inspiring journey to read. Each chapter sparked passion from jaw-dropping historical events. I was fascinated by the personal ideals at war with scientific discoveries throughout history. Metaxas delved into “fine-tuned” details of the Earth and the Universe. Each spectacular instance made my heart leap with wonder. The complex programming and machinery of a cell evinced how we are fearfully and wonderfully made. I found myself surprised again and again with every powerful archeology discovery. The stories of prominent atheists were incredibly intriguing. These men’s experiences demonstrated how God moves in our hearts and produces faith in Jesus. Is Atheism Dead? is a must read for those questioning their purpose in life as well as those rooted in a purpose from Jesus Christ.

Is Atheism Dead? Eric Metaxas uses well researched facts from science, archaeology and theology to answer this question. His writing is in the engaging style of a great story teller, not like that boring history teacher you had in high school. It is a serious look at the subject while being a fascinating read. I highly recommend this book to anyone with honest questions about the existence of God; those who want to give more intelligent answers to seekers of truth; and those believers who want to strengthen their faith

Engaging, effortless, mind-blowing read. I didn’t want to put it down, but had to after each chapter, just to absorb what I’d just read. The science is miraculous. Scientists, whether or not they believe in God, can’t resist crunching the numbers. And the numbers sparkle in their implications. But there’s more - Part 2, biblical archeology... is astonishing. How have these things not been widely reported? Then Part 3, the obligatory look at prominent atheists, is necessary and worthwhile.

Metaxas' latest tome is something of a sequel, or even rebuttal, to the Time magazine article (and cover feature) from 1966 which asks the question "Is God Dead?" At that time many in the scientific community would have answered "yes", and put the issue to bed. However, in the decades since, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction forcing the world to face the fact that science cannot disprove the existence of God. By exploring scientific and archaeological discoveries of late and illuminating the doubts had by renowned atheists (that ultimately led to their turn from atheism), Metaxas offers insight into what has caused the shift. Through an enormous amount of detailed information that is written in an intelligible and engaging way that only Metaxas can master, I was left in awe of our Creator, His creation, and the brilliant minds that have deciphered the science that ultimately points back to Him. I believe this book will challenge the status quo we have been fed from the scientific community for decades and force us to wrestle with whether we are going to acknowledge the facts for what they are or continue to sweep them aside to avoid the hard conversations that arise when faith and science meet. This is an exciting book that has the potential to spark thoughtful, lively discussion on the question that science cannot answer, "why?" For me, this book further proves what Paul says in Romans 1:20 and Metaxas quotes on page 308 "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.” Well done, Mr. Metaxas.
