Q: if the table is 40" wide and the leaf is 18" wide....how does the table end up being 60"?

A: If you look at the "Highlights" section, you will see the table expands to 58 3/8 inches with the leaf. It looks like they just rounded up for the dimensions section. Sorry for the confusion!
