Great story and acting, but sex scene is completely unnecessary

This is a story about both a teenage boy from a bad home environment and a ex-con who became sort of a mentor to him. They both work hard to try to make life better. The story has a sad ending, but at the same time provide hope. Acting was amazingly good. The bonus feature on the disc has an interesting segment showing how the main actors were picked, and that was the only reason why I bought the disc version rather than the stream version. I don't understand why a sex scene was thrown in though. It was almost like they threw it in just because it was expected in many movies that involved mature subject matters. Fortunately the scene did not involve any minors.
