Description

Book Synopsis

Discover an easy-to-follow guide with actionable steps to help you raise your teens well - minus the sass or back-talk!

Are you unsure of how to parent your not-so-little son or daughter now that they've reached their teenage years?

Do you ever worry that you are giving them too little or too much independence?

Are you unsure of how to discipline your teenager now that timeouts no longer hold the same weight?

If you answered 'yes' to any of the above questions, then you have come to the right place.

As parents, your number one goal is to prepare your children to leave the nest and flourish on their own. And let's face it - you only have a few more years to teach your teen everything they need to know before they take on the world as young adults.

However, in one recent study, 25% of parents admitted they were their teen's main barrier to "launching" and moving out because they did not take the time or effort to give their teens more independence during those crucial teenage years.

Don't be a part of this statistic. Discover what you need to know about parenting now for your teen to have success later.

This complete step-by-step guide will help you get through to your teen by discovering the inner workings of their minds and using this to inform your parenting.

In this guide, you will discover:

  • How to transition from parenting children to adolescents with little pushback or upheaval
  • An overview of the different parenting styles and which work best in raising healthy, happy young adults
  • How to foster both self-awareness and independence in your teen - give them the best chance of transitioning from your house to their own dorm or apartment when the time comes
  • Case studies of parents who used the steps outlined in this book to improve their relationships with their teens
  • The importance of communication and how to talk to your teen so they will actually hear you (and with minimal eye-rolling as they do)
  • How to set boundaries as a family, including when you should be flexible and when you should hold on to your beliefs
  • Easy-to-implement steps to build a stronger relationship with your teen
  • The different ways you can give your teen more responsibility -and all of the things they should be doing on their own with little to no assistance from you
  • The best ways to discipline your teen when they break non-negotiable rules that will help them change their future behaviors
  • Why self-care matters for both parents and teens - and how to fit easy self-care routines into your busy schedules

An excellent teaching tool that every single family should know about!

The example scenarios given in various sections of the book are extremely helpful. It is important to note that the author provides both the adolescent teenager's point of view, as well as the parent's point of view as a guide for what to do and what not to do in certain situations.

I appreciate how the author offers more than one solution and possible outcome as a problem solving guidance tool. The author does an excellent job of explaining the different parenting styles, the pros and cons of each one, and offers step by step guidelines for effectively parenting today's teens while allowing them to learn by trial and error in order to become successfully independent and maintain a positive relationship with their parents.

I also appreciate the questions asked at the end of each chapter with a blank section for answers to be filled in by the individual when utilizing the book as a teaching tool. This would also be beneficial for families who are seeking counseling services to assist with problematic issues within the household.

I truly wish this book had been written when I was a teenager. Fantastic read!

A "must read" for all parents

This book is well-written, well-organized, clear, with powerful examples, and full of nuggets of wisdom for guiding kids to become healthy, productive adults. I particularly liked the sections dealing with the following topics: talking by listening; disciplining with specific responsibility; the real effects of yelling; how to involve teenagers in mutual decision making; recognizing helpful boundaries; productively negotiating optional situations; punishing by calibrated discipline; and realistically expecting imperfection, in kids and oneself. This is a powerful book for productively handling the inevitable bumps and knocks of the young birds flapping their wings before flying away from the nest. All parents should read this book. Highly recommended!

So Helpful, Definitely Recommend

My husband and I are currently going through the process to Foster or adopt and why we've gone through training and red several books about raising a baby, I felt we also needed to read something about grazing a teen. When I stumbled across this book a couple of days ago immediately bought it because it looked helpful and it was.

It mentions a lot of things that I didn't think of and solutions to a lot of things that I wouldn't have thought of any other time because I've never raised a teen. I love that at the end of chapters there are considerations for you to reflect on you're keen in parenting them in your relationship with them to actually help you grow as opposed to just simply reading the book.

I think this is a book we will continue to refer back to in the future and I actually plan on recommending it to other parents within our training group.
