The whole mat is not as bouyant as I expected. You lay in water up to about half your body depth. The pillow is hollow underneath, so is no more bouyant than the rest of the mat and my hair gets wet unless I stuff some foam noodles under there. It's also fairly heavy. On the plus side, I got the pink and it's pretty, and no matter how you roll it, it unrolls flat on the pool right away. Unlike other foam mats I've seen, this appears to be one material all the way through rather than a foam core with a plastic coating. It's decent but if you want to float a little higher, look for thicker than this one's 1.6".
