This book was more sophisticated than I expected it to be, and I think it's a great addition to the middle grade fantasy series that have happily become so popular. It's really interesting to read about Keynan's relationship with his parents, and his initial desires versus what they think he should do. I feel like a lot of younger readers will relate to that, as well as to Keynan's eventual realizations as he continues to grow and mature throughout the story. The world building is terrific with awesome explanations of the magic. It seems like that would be very engaging to readers, as well as the relationships that develop among the characters. Those relationships are relatable because they contain a lot of complexities. It's not like everyone is immediately on board with working as a team, and I think that's something that middle schoolers often think adults don't understand. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this series!
