Q: How do you sanitize straw holder after use when out to eat?

submitted by Lola - 17 days ago
  • A: It’s simple! You just blow the water back through the straw and it backflushes the system, then give it a shake to expel any additional water.  We also recommend removing the silicone mouthpiece and bottom plug after about a week of continuous use, rinsing with soap and water and letting dry. The membrane should not be in contact with soap, as it can cause clogging.   The carry case is dishwasher safe and can be cleaned with soap and water.

Q: Is this only for water or can it be used in soda?

submitted by R2weise - 18 days ago
  • A: You can use the LifeStraw Sip with non-carbonated beverages such as clear cocktails or juice. It is preferable not to use the Sip with beverages like smoothies or juices with a lot of pulp which can clog the membrane.

Q: Does this straw need to be replaced/trashed after a year of daily use? Can you replace the membrane?

submitted by kris - 18 days ago
  • A: The lifespan is 1,000 liters or 264 gallons.  If you take an assumption of someone drinking a bottle of water a day with the straw (0.5 liters), this in principle means the product can last over five  years with everyday use.  We expect most people will not end up using the product daily, so the lifespan should be even greater than five years.  The filter itself is not replaceable.  All pieces other than the membrane are recyclable.  To recycle, remove the silicone pieces and recycle.  Then, to extract the membrane from the straw, drill a hole into the bottom to loosen and remove the membrane - noting that this will damage the filter and render it unsafe so this should only be done when ready to discard the product. Recycle the stainless steel and discard the inner membrane.  Note: the product has a projected lifespan of 1,000 liters, but this is a conservative estimate based on longevity testing with dirty water and maintenance of flow rate.

Q: can you please explain how this filter works? It is like the others: having 2 filters: the membrane and the other? Thanks

submitted by Li - 3 months ago
  • A: The LifeStraw SIP filter is a hollow fiber membrane-only filter. It uses physical filtration to remove harmful contaminants from water as you sip through it. The filter is made of a hollow Fiber Membrane (0.2 micron pore size). Water is pulled through these tiny tubes with microscopic pores These pores block: Bacteria (like E. coli) Parasites (like Giardia and Cryptosporidium) Microplastics This is a mechanical barrier—no chemicals or carbon involved. How It Works: You sip through the mouthpiece. Your suction draws water through the hollow fibers. Contaminants get trapped on the outside of the fibers. Clean water passes through the pores and into your mouth. What It Removes: 99.999999% of bacteria 99.999% of parasites 99.999% of microplastics Tested to US EPA & NSF P231 standards for microbiological water purifiers. Filter Life & Maintenance: The LifeStraw Sip filter has a lifespan of up to 1,000 liters (approximately 264 gallons), which equates to over a year of daily use. Maintenance: Backflush by blowing air or clean water back through the mouthpiece to prevent clogging. Storage: Keep moist during extended storage. Do not let the membrane dry out between uses.

I am so sorry, we have not used the straws yet! I got them specifically for when we are traveling and have only tap water available. At this time of year, we don’t travel! I will be happy to write a review once we have used them!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Packaging is nice, easy to open. Looks durable. I’ve used my straw a handful of times. I don’t know if I love it, the concept is cool but I don’t see myself carrying a straw with me at all times. Because of practicality I am not a fan. However, I think is a cool innovative product and maybe a great product for those who travel to areas where water quality is not the best. I can totally see a camper or someone traveling around the world using this product.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Simple and very easy to use. I have used the previous bulkier versions of these (never had to use it out of necessity, just for fun as a test before I brought it along on a long hike). This is way smaller. I wish I could test the efficacy vs other bigger models but alas I am but a simple man.

I bought a three pack. One is for my daughter going this summer to Peru. . The other two are for my wife and I are traveling around the country. Drinking different waters is not always good for you. Life straw should be great. Thank you.
