Description
Longtime customer favorites, our heavy-duty, powder-coated steel tomato cages are taller, wider and stronger than old-fashioned cone-shaped supports. And unlike flimsier versions, these are strong enough to support full-grown vines loaded with tomatoes. The tomato cages support plants on all sides (no tying needed) and keep plants up off the ground for better air circulation, cleaner fruit and fewer diseases. Large openings make harvesting easy, and the cages fold flat for off-season storage. In windy locations, we recommend anchoring with our Extra-Tall Earth Staples , sold separately.

Q: Please tell me how to get these untangled. They are stuck together and I have no clue how to undue them Please Let me know, as I do not want to bend them.
submitted by Annie - 6 years ago
A: I'm so sorry to hear that your Tomato Cages are tangled! It sounds like the hinged corners of one cage may be caught in the cross pieces of another cage. Find the corners (where one wire is wrapped in a spiral around another wire), and if they are caught in another cage, gently separate the two cages.

Comparing to earlier Gardener's Supply cages, tips for usage
4 out of 5 stars

I bought these cages in green and also in silver a couple seasons ago. The coating has held up in most cases even though I left them out all winter one year. When I first got the cages, I had garden help and did not notice that they are different from the original ones I bought 10 years ago here at Gardener's Supply. The originals have 5 evenly spaced cross bars, and these have 4 bars. In these new cages, the lowest and next lowest bar have a greater separation then the higher level bars. If you push the cages into the ground until the lowest bottom bar is close to the ground, then there is a considerable cap before the first useful cross support. I prefer the originals with the 5 cross bars, because they support young plants better. I bought about 36 of these new cages. The panels seems to disconnect a bit more frequently than the originals. It is possible to reconnect them. Starting at the top or bottom hook on the disconnected panels, re-hook the panel. After connecting each hook, push all connected hooks for the panel (and perhaps the other panels) to be as far in as possible. To get the hook to fully engage, you can try folding the panel back and forth along the side with that hook. This will often cause the hook to fully engage. Fully engaged hooks are less likely to unhook when you attempt to attach another loose hook. You can stack the cages to create a taller support. When stacking, place the ground stakes of the higher cage inside the lower cage. I rest the bottom hooks of the top cage onto the top bar or hooks of the bottom cage to create as much stability as possible.
Bad Design, OKAY cage

Too short for Indeterminate tomatoes. Annoying to put back together. Cheap, OKAY cage. Flawed design rubs off protective coating = unavoidable rust. Won't repurchase, will still use. Didn't bend.
Good for Peppers, Not Tomatoes

These cages did not work for my tomatoes. They are too flimsy, too short, and could not hold up my tomatoes when they were fully grown. May be good for pepper plants but not tomatoes. I will be asking for a refund.

I don't know if being made in India has anything to do with it, but I would take these off the website immediately. Such a disappointment coming from the company I love and respect. Too flimsy.

What a waste of money. The cages are not welded together and fall apart with the least amount of pressure applied. I use cardboard in the garden and when I tried to push the cage through I ended up with four individual panels in my hands. I never could get them back together properly but managed to get them to a workable solution. I had already installed two in my grow bags which worked fine or I would have returned them. A lot of money for items with very limited use. Very disappointed because everything I've ordered from Gardner's before has been top quality but this was like something you might get at the local dollar store.

flimsy and the wind will probably send them into my neighbor's yard. If this is a lifetime product I'll eat my hat

Assembling them is a nightmare. They constantly come unattached. I finally gave up after 2 years of trying to love them and just use the pieces as mini trellises. I have a few super heavy duty ones a friend gave me many years ago. I had hoped these were the same. Nope. Not even close. I am now on the hunt to replace these and hoping to find more of those. Don't waste your time
I bought four last year and am doubling up this year.

I am so disappointed. I thought these would be the extremely durable heavy gauge steel cages GSC used to offer. They are not. They are only a little better than the flimsy cages at the local big box store. They are strong enough to support the plants, but they will not be durable—the wire is not rigid enough.
Flimsy at best!

I was disappointed that after just one summer two of these cages have broken welds and several pieces are falling off.

We've used these square tomato cages by themselves, but also, when necessary, in combination with staking. They've made a big difference in supporting our heirloom tomato plants. The larger size allows for plant growth, but also ease with pruning. Bought eight last year; bought four more this year.
The best tomato cages!

I like the shape and size of these. Haven't had an issue with them being spindly or falling apart (tho it does take some elbow grease to unfold them from their flat shipping shape.) My only gripe with them is that the finish doesn't keep its color. Yes, we live with intense Denver sun, but I don't think the color should fade after only 1-2 seasons.
ACTUALLY 4-AND--1/2 STARS CUZ A BIT FLIMSY BUT STILL GOOD

I bought a set of 3 square cages from a popular hardware big--box store and the cages were flddly to assemble -- we had to use twist-ties to keep the wires from separating. Also, the big-box store cages had vertical wires running down the center of all 4 sides so there was not much room to reach inside the cages. Happily our set of FOUR square cages from Gardeners Supply was a lot less fiddly to assemble and there's no vertical wires running down the center of the 4 cage sides giving me much wider access to reach the plant inside the cage. I have posted a photo of the old bright green cage from our local hardware store with the annoying center side wire and I posted a photo of the darker green cage from Gardeners Supply showing the open sides.. My experience is that no square cage is super sturdy thus my 4-1/2 star rating -- but compared to the round tomato cages I've used in the past the square cages don't bend over as much from the weight of mature tomato or cucumber plants and square cages are easier to reach inside when harvesting..

I was so frustrated with trying to keep this product in one piece. By the time I'd get one thing together, another one came apart. These looked great, but for the price, they're just not worth it. I had much better luck with the towers I bought for my beans.

When I first tried putting it into the ground I gently pushed on it with my foot & it broke the wire welding so its not super sturdy, be careful. It would be great for tall flower supports if you had delphiniums/ foxgloves starting that need some help. When I finally received my tomatos cages my tomato plants where to big to use normally so I pulled it apart. It became an open faced cage, one side was completely opened it did support it, but its flimsy I don't feel it was tall enough for certain types of tomato. I'll try it again this season (2022) and see if it helps being in position at the proper time of planting.

Unfortunately the cages kept collapsing and coming apart under the weight of my tomato plants. They didn't stand up as well as the plain old conical cages.

These are absolutely terrific. I have 8 tomato cages from Gardeners but for the rest of my tomatoes this year i used the standard round ones from a local store, like I always have in the past. We had some big storms this season with heavy rain and wind but the cages I bought from you held up in those September storms and today I picked tomatoes from those in my eight Gardeners cages but all the other tomatoes are long gone. Because we live in a possible hurricane zone, I did do one extra protective thing for all my tomato plants this past spring. For each tomato plant, I used 2 yellow tent stakes, pounded into the ground at opposite corners, for all 16 tomato plants. But even with that extra protection, the tomatoes supported by those other round cages did not make it through the heavy rain and tropical storm winds (but not official hurricanes this year) we had last month. So I ordered some more from you today so that I'll be ready to protect all my tomatoes when spring comes. Thanks for a great product!
