About this item
Highlights
- Real Live Plant
- Difficulty level: Medium
- Pet-friendly, non-toxic to pets or humans
- LIGHT: The Calathea prefers partial shade with moderate to bright indirect sunlight. While your plant can tolerate low lighting, it does not handle direct sunlight well. Too much direct sunlight, especially the intense afternoon sun, can lead to crispy brown or burnt leaves.
- WATER: We suggest watering once a week, but keep in mind that depending on where you live and how much sunlight your plant is getting, you may need to increase or decrease watering. Always check the top 1-2 inches of your Calathea’s soil. Dry soil means it’s time to water.
- TEMPERATURE: Temperatures of 65°-85° are ideal for your Calathea. Avoid placing your plant in spots under air vents or near heaters, as your plant is very sensitive to extreme drops or increases in temperature.
- FERTILIZER: Fertilize once a month during the spring and summer with a weak, nitrogen-rich fertilizer diluted to half strength or give ¼ of the suggested dose of a liquid houseplant fertilizer at the beginning of spring and again mid-summer.
- Actual plant size may vary, no two plants are alike
Description
Calathea lancifolia, most commonly known as the Rattlesnake Calathea, is native to the rainforests of Brazil. The distinctive decorative markings, which give them their common name offer many variegated patterns in various shades of green and purple. Even the undersides of their leaves are breathtaking with striking purplish-red tones.
Your Calathea’s stems and leaves will let you know if there’s a problem: fading leaf colors or patterns, limp or rotting stems, or browning leaf edges all signal to the plant parent that something in the Calathea’s routine needs to be adjusted.
Rattlesnake Calatheas are easy to propagate through division once they’ve been well established.
Rattlesnake plants are sometimes confused for prayer plants (Marantas) because their leaves tend to point upwards at night and drop back down during daylight, in what is described as a circadian motion. Grow pot color may vary.
